SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,453, dated August 18, 1895.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH BAssEEEUND, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Ernperor, and a resident of Hildesheim, in the Province of Hanover, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specication.

This invention refers to buttons in which the head-z'. c., that part which is put through the button yhole or holes-consists of two elastic bows arranged either side by side or one Within the other, and in which the said two parts that constitute the head may be turned each by ninety degrees, so that they then lie parallel to the collar, rufde, or other piece of linen to be fastened, and extend in opposite directions; and my improvements in buttons of this kind relate to the said elastic bows as well as to the shank holding them, as will be made more clear by the following paragraph:

In buttons of the sort in question known up to the present there is a constant reduction of the horizontal sections of the bows as Well as of the shank, when consecutive sections are taken in the order from the head to the foot of the button, the button hole or holes now of the piece of linen to be fastened, and also that of those of the shirt, chemise, dac., receiving the said piece of linen, must, as a matter of course, be long enough to let pass the broadest part of the bows or the outer bow, respectively, and there is thus the possibility that the small or short buttonshank may move lengthwise in the farlonger buttonhole, so that friction arises between the.

-of the same does not exceed the horizontal section of the shank.

Another important feature of my invention consists in employing elastic bows also for the foot of the button, and in doing so Ikeep the same rules with 'regard to the dimension of the bows, as has above been explained.

In order to make my invention more clear, I refer to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters denote similar parts throughout the several views, and in which- Figure l is a front view of my improved button, the links being in their position of rest or lying in one plane with the shank, respectively. Fig. 2 is a side view of the button, the links having the same position as in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an upper view of the button, the links being in their working position or lying rectangularly to the shank; and Fig. 4 is another side view of the button, the position of the links being the same as in Fig. 3. Referring to Figs. l to 4, d is the shank of the button, which at both its ends is provided with the outer bows l)` b and the inner bows c c', which are held by the projections a. The length of the shank, as well as its breadth, is exactly the like throughout the Whole height of the shank, as distinctly to be seen from Figs. l and 2, and also the greatest breadth of the outer bows does not project beyond the shank, so that the drawbacks above mentionedare entirely prevented.

Having now described the nature of this invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- A button having two pairs b c b c of movable links connected by one shank; one pair of said links being adapted to form the head, the other the base of the button; said shank being formed by a piece ot lying in a plane with the links, when the latter are in theirA JOSEPH BASSFREUND.
