SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,111, dated August 6, 1895.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, JOEL NORTHRUP, of Otisville, in the-county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Game Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved game apparatus, more especially designed for playing the game of jackstones in a very novel manner and to afford considerable amusement to the players, the apparatus being arranged so that considerable skill on the part of the players is required to successfully play the game.

The invention consists of a flanged play board or frame and a removable causeway held on the said board and provided with a series of devices for the reception and passage of the j ackstones, withwhich the game is played.

The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to. the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional sideelevation of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

The improved game apparatus is provided I with a board A of a suitablesize, having side flanges B and end flanges B formed on their inner faces with grooves for the reception of the ends of the causeway 0, provided with a series of devices for the reception and passage of the jackstones, with which the game is played. The causeway O is held removably on the ends B of the board, and the form of the causeway can be greatly changed according to the ability of the play'erthat is, the causeway can be made with devices more or less difficult for the reception and passage of the jackstones.

As illustrated in the drawings, the causeway 0 is provided with the two sides 0' and Ciconnected with each other near one end by a suitable projection 0 forming in the causeway a barn D, the entrance to which is formed by an opening 0 in the side 0 Next to this barn'D inthe causeway is arranged a bridge by providing a second partition C and forming the sides 0' and C with openings C, as is plainly shown in the drawings.

The top of the bridge is formed by a plate 0 attached to the top of the sides 0' and C and railings for the bridge are formed by extending the partitions C and 0 above the sides 0 and 0 as shown. Another partition 0 forms with the partition C a receptacle E for the reception of the jackstones, and next to this receptacle and above the sides 0 and C is arranged a merry-go-round F, the pivot G of which is secured in a post H, held between the sides O and 0 This merry-goround F is formed with a disk F'and radial partitions F forming compartments for the reception of individual jackstones. Next to the merry-go-round is arranged a stump I, supported on a plate J, attached to the sides C and C of the causeway O.

On the board A next to the side 0 may be painted or otherwise affixed the representation of a snake to increase the difficulty of playing the game ,by compelling the player to commence operations on either side of the said representation.

The game may be greatly'varied by other obstructions, hazards, hinderances, or the like, arranged either in the causeway O or on the board direct, so as to render the proper playing of the game more difficult.

It is understood that in playing the game the player throws the jackstones in the airand at the same time pushes or throws a jackstone resting on the board into one of the devices in the causeway O, as may be called forin the game.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a game apparatus, a causeway formed of two sides connected by transverse boards forming receptacles, one of which is provided with an opening in one side, the said causeway being also provided with a covered portion and openings in its sidesforming a bridge, and with a revolving device, and a projection over its top, substantially as described.

2. A game apparatus, comprising a flanged board or frame, and a causeway extending across the board or frame and formed of two its top, substantially as herein shown and desides connected by transverse boards forming scribed. receptacles, one of which is provided with an -r 1 7 opening in one side, the said causeway being JOEL LOB l HRUP' 5 also provided with a covered portion and Witnesses:
