Game-Apparatus N0. 163,845. v Patentedjune1,l875..
THE GRAPHIC COJH 0T0 -LITH. 39 Ii 4] PARK PLACE, N.Y.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES L. BROWNE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAME APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,845, dated J one 1, 1875; application filed October 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAS. L. BROWNE, of the city of Brooklyn, State of New York, have invented an Improved Apparatus for Playing the Game of Quoits, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a game apparatus for popular amusement; and consists of the shield or hub A, constructed, preferably, of wood, in which is sawed the holes B B B B and O O (J, the pegs D D D, the four quoits, like at E, the adjustable rods F F, and the mortised holes G G.
The shield or hub is made about threefourths of an inch in thickness, and fourteen and one-half inches each way. The pegs are, respectively, two and one-half inches and five and one-half inches long, the three shorter ones D being placed in the holes 0 O 0 when used in the parlor, and two longer ones, as D, placed in the outer holes 0 O, to pin the shield or hub to the sward when used on the lawn. The quoits, four in number, are made circular in shapesay five inches in diameterwith hole in the center, and, preferably, of leather, with an inner lining of stout cotton drilling or other suitable material, and filled with sand.
The game is played by placing the shield or hub flat on the floor against the wall of the parlor or hall, after adjusting into the holes G G the short rods F F, (which are designed to remove the shield or hub a short distance from the wall,) or on any selected place on the lawn, by pinning it to the sward with the long pins D D. The short rods F F will not be used when the game is played on the lawn.
The players stand fifteen or twenty feet from the shield or hub, and strive to pitch the quoits into the holes B B B B, or over the pegs O O O, scoring such number ofpoints as prescribed therefor by the rules of this new game.
I am aware of iron quoits having been used on quoit-grounds, but of none in combination or construction such as described herein, for use in the parlor or on the lawn.
I claim as my invention 1. The perforated shield or hub A, in com- 1 bination with the adjustable pegs D D and rods F, substantially as described.
2. The quoits E, composed of hollow rings of leather or equivalent material, and filled with sand or other stuffin g, as and for the purpose set forth.
