GAME APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 2, 1907.
Application filed June 28,1906. Serial No. 323,801.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL WEAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game Apparatuses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to game apparatus.
The object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this character by means of which an interesting and amusing game may be played and one which will require more or less skill on the part of the players and which will afford means for healthful exercise and development of the muscles.
WVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and ar rangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a game apparatus constructed in accordance with the invention; and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same, showing in full lines the position of the game-board when in use and in dotted lines the position of the board when raised for the discharge and removal of the balls or projectiles used in playing the game.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the apparatus, which consists of a board 2, provided with a plurality of openings forming boxes 3, the upper edges of which are all disposed in the same plane. The boxes are arranged in parallel numbered rows in the board, the boxes in each transverselydisposed row bearing the same numeral and the numerals of each row being different. In the present instance the lowest row of boxes is numbered 1, while the highest row of boxes is numbered 7. The numbered rows are arranged at random and not in consecutive order, and their order may be varied in any desired manner. The board 2 is supported in an inclined position upon a stand 4 and is preferably hinged at its upper rear edge to an upwardly projecting back board or guard 5, arranged on the rear upper side of the frame, as shown. Immediately below the board 2 is arranged an inclined platform or floor 6, upon which the board 2 rests or is supported in any suitable manner. On the frontside of the stand 4 at the lower end of the platform 6 is arranged a trough 7 by means of which the balls 8 or other projectiles by which the game is played are caught after rolling down the inclined platform 6, upon which said balls are discharged through the boxes 3 when the board 2 is raised to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings, thus enabling the balls to be quickly gathered for further use. Arranged on the stand 4 and preferably secured at one end to the back board or guard 5 and at their opposite ends to the platform 6 are guardrails 9, which extend along the sides of the board and prevent the balls or other projectiles from rolling off the side board when thrown thereon.
A number of different games maybe played upon the apparatus and by any number of players, one of such games being to provide each player with a certain number of balls, which they are supposed to throw at the board, endeavoring to throw said balls into the holes bearing the largest numbers, the object of the game being to obtain the highest number of points, each box counting the number of points corresponding to the number of said box, so that in the present instance should each player be given four balls the highest number of points which could be obtained by throwing said balls would be twenty-eight, in which case it would be necessary for all four balls to be thrown into the row of boxes bearing the number 7. On the other hand, the lowest score that could be obtained would be four, in which case all four balls would be thrown into the 'row of boxes numbered 1. As considerable skill would be required in throwing the balls in any particular box or boxes, it is ob.
vious that a great diversity of scores would result from the balls entering the various boxes. IVhile I have described one system of counting, it is obvious that by providing a greater or less number of balls or by changing the order and arrangement of the numerals on the boxes that the manner of playing the game and counting the results may be varied. From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operationof the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A game apparatus comprising a stand having an upwardly-projecting back board or guard arranged at its rear upper edge, a gameboard hingedly connected to the back board and comprising a grid having appropriatelynumbered openings, all of which are of the same size and shape, an inclined platform arranged below the board to support the same, guard-rails arranged at each side of the board, and a trough disposed at the lower end of the platform.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
