Description

(No Model.)
A. S. SPAULDING.
- HOSPITAL SCREEN. No 543,906.
Patented AfigQG, 1895.
UNITED, STATES PATENT @rricn.
ALGENON S. SPAULDING, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE FLEXIBLE DOOR AND SHUTTER COMPANY, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
HOSPITAL-SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 543,906, dated August 6, 1895.
Application filed August 4, 1892. Serial No. 442,199- (N'o model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALGENON S. SPAULDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hospital-Screens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, and in which- Figurel represents in perspective view a screen embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the framework and showing the method of hinging the leaves together. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the hinge by which the leaves of the screen are united. Fig. 4: is a top View of that portion of the hinge forming the hook. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the parallel bars carrying the pintles; and Fig. 6 is an end view of two of the stiles of the screen with their intervening strip, the stiles being shown in a folded position.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the different figures.
The object of my invention is to provide a screen designed for use in hospitals and for other purposes, in which the joint between the hinged leaves will be closed, so as to leave no opening which may be looked through.
A A denote the leaves of the screen, consisting of framework comprising the stiles B B, which are hinged to an intervening strip or bar C, so that the edges of the bar and the edges of the stiles hinged theretoshall present a joint having curved surfaces concentric with the axis of rotation of the hinged joint.
In the construction shown the intervening strip or bar 0 is provided upon its opposite edges with the convex barrels D D, having a circular periphery concentric with the axis of the hinge.
Inserted transversely in the strip 0 are the parallel bars E E, united by pins E, which form the pintles of the hinge and which are concentric with the barrels D D when the parallel bars E E are inserted in their place;
Inclosed between the bars E E and pivoted upon one of the pintles E is a circular plate F concentric with one of the barrels D and having a projecting stem F extending into and attached to one of the stiles B.
I do not confine myself to any special method of attaching the stem F to the stile, but it may be accomplished by providing a screw-threaded end F to receive a flanged nut F The plate F is placed upon its pintle E before the bars E are inserted in the central strip 0.
Upon the other pintle E, I hinge a similar circular plate G, provided with a radial slot G, extending to the center of the plate, which allows the plate G to be hinged upon its pintle after the plates E E have been inserted in the central strip 0. The plate G is provided with a stem G which is attached to one of the stiles B by any known method, but preferably by means of the screw-threaded end G and flanged nut G The central strip 0 is provided with the projecting oblique surfaces H H, and the hinged edges ,of the stiles B B are similarly beveled at I I, serving as stops when the stiles are folded into parallel planes, as shown in Fig. 6.
What Iclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a pair of hinged leaves of an. intervening strip 0 provided with barrels D, D, bars E, E, held transversely in said strip 0 and having pins E, E, concentric with said barrels, plate F hinged upon one of said pins andattached to one of said leaves and a plate G, provided with a radial slot G by which it is hooked upon the other of said pins, said hooked plate being attached to the other of said leaves, substantially as described.
Dated the 30th day of July, 1892.
