JAMES HAND, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T WILLIAM M.
. AYRES da SONS, OF SAME PLACE.
HORS E-BLAN-KET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,931, dated July 16,1895. Application filed May 27, 1895. serial No. 550,809. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may conoci/'77,.
Be it known that I, JAMES HAND, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Horse-Blankets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of certain improvements in the horse-blanket for which I filed ing for the blanket on the top of the neck and prevent exposure at this point when the split or divided portion of lthe blanket was separated. This ap Was firmly secured along one edge to the main portion of the blanket and its opposite edge was connected to the blanket through the medium of an elasticf strap or band; and the object of my present invention is to provide a more acceptable means than that formerly adopted for retaining the under flap in its proper position in respect to the blanket. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a perspective view of sufficient of the front portion of a horse-blanket to illustrate my present invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged views of that portion of the blanket to which the invention particularly relates, Fig. 2 showing the blanket fully contracted, and Fig. 3 showing the blanket expanded by spreading the divided back portion of the same.
In Fig. l A represents the body of the blanket, and a the central slit or division formed in the front portion of the same above the neck, so as to permit the neck-opening of the blanket to be expanded or contracted, a strap b and buckle b serving to permit expansion of the blanket to any desired extent.
B is the underapvhich is secured to the blanket at a point adjacent to the inner end of the slit, but has free edges. vIlrorn each edge of the under lap B, near the front end of the same, extends a strap d, which passes through an opening d in the blanket and engages a buckle d2, secured upon the outer side of the blanket adjacent to said opening. These straps d therefore serve at all times to secure the opposite edges of the flap -B in their proper position in respect to the opposite sides of the blanket, said straps d being tightened when the strap b is tightened to draw the opposite halves of the blanket together, as shown inFig. 2, and the straps cl being correspondingly slackened when the strap b is slackened to permit expansion of the neck portion of the blanket, as shown in Fig. 3.
The strap and buckle may, if desired, be used only in connection with one edge of the under ap B, the other edge being secured to the corresponding side portion of the blanket; but the use of the adjustable straps in connection with each edge of the under flap is preferred.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. Thedcombination of a'horse blanket having at the neck end a slit or divided portion e provided with means for adjusting the same,
the under iiap for closing the gap formed by said slit or divided portion of the blanket, means for securing one edge of said iap to the blanket and a strap connected to the other edge portion of said flap near the front end of the same, said strap passing through an openingV in the side of the blanket and being adj ustably secured upon the outer face of th same, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a horse blanket having at the neck end a slit or divided portion with means foradjusting the same, an under flap covering the gap formed by said slit or divided portion of the blanket, and straps extending from each edge portion of said flap near the front end of the same through openings in the blanket on opposite sides of the slit or divided portion of the same, each of these straps being provided with adjustable securing 'means on the outer side of the blanket, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES HAND.
