COPY-HCLDER FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
.EZPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,939, dated July 2, 1895.
application filed October 29, 1894- Serial No. 527,176- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDWIN AMBROSE LY MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottumwa, in the county of Wapello and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy-Holders for Type-VVriters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in copy-holders which are designed for use in connection with typewriters, for holding a note book or a single sheet, and clamped in such a way that the pages will be held fiat from the first to the last page, and Without in any way binding the pages.
A further object of the invention is to produce a copy holder in which the copy will be directle or nearly so, in line with the eye of the operator, and then the provision of a de tachable guard for preventing the sheet that is being printed upon, from obscuring the notes of the book.
Theinvention consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this specification, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my copyholder shown as secured to a type-writer frame. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the holder detached. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the devicefor preventing the paper being written upon from obscuring the notes on the copy-book from the View of the operator.
Reference now being bad to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the frame of the type writer behind the traveling carriage, and at any convenient location is secured the clamp B secured to the edge of the typewriter frame or other convenient part by means of a thumb screw 5. At 0 care the sockets formed in the said clamp for the re- 4 ception of the note book holder standard 0,
which consists of two wires bent as shown, and the lower clamp engaging ends held rigidly a suitable distance apart, so that thetwo ends will readily register with the sockets provided therefor. The flat metallic plate D, is provided for this purpose of holding the lower ends of the copyholder, as well as for I receiving the fiat clamping member E, which has secured to it the guide or wire F, with its free end bent laterally as at f; this guide being provided for the purpose of preventing the paper which is being written upon, getting in the line of vision between the operator and his note book carried on the holder.
The upper ends of the wires forming the standard of the holder gradually bend outward until they reach the points I), when one of the wires B is bent in a horizontal direction for a short distance. Thence the Wire is bent upon itself, the said bent portion being slightly curved forward forming the depending hook or balancing device G designed to bear against the bound leaves of the note book H. The wire B after forming the said bend upon itself, continues on in its horizontal direction and at It meets and is secured to the other standard wire B is then bent horizont-ally upon itself as seen at J, thus forming the clamp between the two horizontal portions of the wire B, for holding the note book.
It will be seen that by means of the clamping device, and the balancing member G, the former securely holding the two backs of the note book while the latter balances the turned leaves in the position shown in the accompanying drawings, the unturned pages of the said note book are held flat without in any way binding the same. The adjustable guard or wire, for preventing the paper which is being written upon, from obscuring the view of the notes, may be readily removed, and the rack easily and quickly detached from the clamp held to any convenient part of the type writer, when it is desired to inclose the writer in a case, or cabinet.
Having thus described my invention,what
I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A copy holder for type writers having combined with the frame of a typewriter, the clamp B having sockets c, the standard composed of the wires B'and Bisupported therein, their upper portions bent horizontally and fastened together, and one of the wires being extended and bent upon itself to form a clamp, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a copy holder for type writers, the com bination of a clamp provided with a thumb screw for securing the same to the frameof a type writer, the wire frame 0 consisting of the two wires B and B removably held in sockets in the said clamp, one of the wires of the standard as B bent upon itself in two directions to form the hook G, and the clamp arm J, substantially as shown and described.
3. A copy holder having in combination with the frame of a type Writer, the clamp B provided with thumb screw, and having sockets for the reception of the two upright stande ards B and B clamp, for holding a note book, integral with one of the wires, the guide lever F the plate D designed to carry said guide lever F, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A copy holder for type writers havingin combination for use in connection with the frame of the type writer, the clamps B, Wire standard 0, the plate D rigidly secured to the said standard, a wire F, having the member E secured to one end thereof and designed to engage with plate D, the other end of the wire projecting forward, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. A copy holder for type writers having in combination with the clamp l3,astandar-d composed of the wires B and B secured together at their upper ends, and a forwardly projecting balancing member G, substantially as shown and described. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN AMBROSE LYMAN.
