No. 479,014. Patented July 19, 1892.
NITED STATES i PATENT OFFICE,
JAMES S. MCDONALD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED BOOK AND CARBON -SHEET HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,014, dated July 19, 1892.
Application filed August 3, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES S. MoDoNALn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carbon-Sheet and Book 1IjIolders, of which the following is a specifica- This invention relates to improvements in carbon-sheet'and book holders, in which the carbon-sheet is removably held in its operative position relative to theleaves of the back and with one end free, so that it may be folded back or over out of the way for the removal of the book leaves after they have been marked upon and again returned to its operative position relative to said book-leaves.
This invention further relates to holders binding the several, sheets or leaves in'book form, but removable from the stubsafter the book-leaves have been exhausted and attachable to a new series of: book-leaves constitut- 1iongda new book, which the holder serves to One object of this inventionis a carbonsheet holder so constructed that the carbonsheet may be inserted therein with a minimum amount of handling, and which, once inserted, will be held against accidental 'detachment in a perfectly-smooth condition and by a simple and effective means.
Another object is to combine a carbonholder with a book-holder by the simplest possible means at a minimum cost in the production of both carbon and book holder, and in such manner that when the book-holder is in its operative position in the holder Fig. 3, a longitudinal section through the holder on Serial No. 401,591. (No model.)
Similar letters of reference indicate thesame parts in the several figures of the drawings.
A indicates a series of sheets or blank orders, as the case may be, which are held together in book form by a holder B, which said holder consists of a sheet of spring metal bent to a substantially U-shaped form, but with one longitudinal edge a slightly curved outwardly to facilitate its attachment to the leaves constituting the book. The sides I) b of this holder constitute spring-acting clampin g-jaws, which after the book-leaves are inserted, hold them tightly together, the book forming a cover for the ends of said leaves and the holder in its entirety a book-back.
One of the sides of the holder is of suiticient length to be bent back upon itself from the front edge with a reverse bend to form an integral plate 0 parallel therewith, to which is secured a U-shaped clamp C, embracing the said plate with a spring action, and thus serving to detachably but securely fasten to the holder a carbon-sheet D when the end of the sheet is inserted between the clamp and plate, and this, too, independently of the means for securing the orders or leaves of the book in the holder, so that either the carbon-sheets or the orders may be removed or replaced by new ones without disturbing or detaching the other from the holder.
In practice it is preferred to pivotally secure the clamp to the plate by means of an eyelet or pivot d of some suitable character at one end of the clamp, so-that by taking hold of its free end the clamp may be swung upon its pivot so as to embrace or release the plate, being held in its operative position embracing the plate by some suitable catch device, such as the indentations e therein, near the free end thereof, receiving corresponding projections f upon the plate, or vice-versa, which catch devices are of such character that while they hold the clamp in its operative position with sufficient power to prevent the accidental displacement thereof under all ordinary conditions to which the holder will be subjected at the same time they will readily yield when sufficient pressure is put upon the clamp by the fingers. It would be no departure from the spirit of my invention, however, to dispense with the eyelet or pivot d and attain the same pivotal movement by indenting the clamp into the plate without neces:
sarily puncturing either of them, or to dispense entirely with such pivot connection between the clamp and plate and have the clamp operate with sulficient spring force to be retained in its operative position without the use of either the pivot or catch devices; but for convenience in manipulationthe employment of the pivot and catch devices is preferred.
In Figs. 7 to 10, inclusive, I have shown a modification of my invention in which the form or arrangement of the carbon-holding "devices is the reverse of that shown in the preferred construction-that is to say, in this case the spring-clamp or U-shaped holder E is rigidly secured to or bent out of the metal forming .the holder, and the carbon-sheet is confined therein by a binding-strip F, pivoted at one end to the U-shaped fixed clasp Eand wedging or binding in between the sides of the clasp E, so as to secure the carbon-sheet D therein by a reverse operation from that of the preferred construction; but in all other 1 respects this construction is equivalent to "that of the preferred constrnction, but is not i so desirable because of the mode of operation thereof.
While the form of myholder is believed to bebroadly new whether the book and carbonsheet holders are formed separately and rigidly secured or of a single piece of bent metal,
metal, thereby adding strength and durability to both, and it will be readily observed by an inspection of the accompanying drawings that in both the preferred and modified constructions the book and carbon-sheet holders are formed out of asingle sheet of metal, and obviously the same result may be obtained by even difierent bendings of the metal from those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention. It requires no especial skill to bend these two holders together, and it has been found in practice that both of the holders, when so bent from sheet metal, are not only convenient in operation, 'but that each performs its functions perfectly and independently of the other and enables arapid attachment and dctachment of the sheets they respectively hold without liability of accidental detachment.
My invention is not limited to the use of the holder B upon sheets and blank orders, for it may be attached to a board upon which sheets or blanks are supported.
Having described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent 1s 1. A combined book and carbon sheet holder comprising a U-shaped book-holder composed of bent spring metal adapted to embrace and hold a series of sheets in book form and a carbon-sheet holder secured to the book-holder and provided with a spring-clamp for removably holding a sheet of carbon-paper in position for use upon the book, substantially as described.
2. A combined book and carbon sheet holder comprising a U-shaped book-holder composed of bent spring metal adapted to embrace and hold a series of sheets in book form, a plate secured thereto, and a springclamp for embracing the edge of said plate, so as to constitute a carbon-sheet holder for removably holding a sheet of carbon-paper in position for use on the book, substantially as described.
3. A combined book and carbon sheet holder comprising a removable spring bookholder adapted to hold a series of sheets in book form and a carbon-sheet holder attached to and forming a part of the book-holder for holding a sheet of carbon-paper in position for use upon the book, substantially as described.
4. A combined book and carbon sheet holder comprising a U-shaped book-holder and a supporting-plate for the carbon-holder, composed of a single piece of bent spring metal, and a U-shaped spring-clamp for embracing the edge or" said plate, so as to constitute a carbon-sheet holder, substantially as described.
5. A combined book and carbon sheet holder comprising a U-shaped book-holder composed of bent spring metal and adapted to embrace and hold aseries of sheets in book form, a plate integral with said holder, a
spring-clamp for embracing the edge of said JAMES S. MCDONALD.
