SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent No. 541,710, dated June 25,1895. Application tiled November 4, 1892.` Serial No. 451,007. (No model.)
sists in the construction and arrangement ofv parts first fully set forthand -then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure l representsmy yokesuspender asit appears when used with a shirt, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of my yokesuspender.
Like letters of reference representlike parts in both views.
Referring again tO the drawings, A', represents a yoke similar to that of a shirt,'tlie essential features of my yoke suspender consisting of the longitudinal strips A, and trans` verse connecting yoke A', resting below the neck upon the backl and shoulders of the wearer. The ends a, of the strips A', are pret'- erably constructed and arranged to be attached to adjustable and preferably elastic parts d', at the extremities of which parts d', are located'loops, eyelets or other` depending devices a2, from which the garment to be worn may be hung. I ordinarilyprovide the said connecting part A', with buckle as, by which the length of the samemay be adj usted.
It will be noted that my invention differs essentially from a brace, in which the strain is fromv the shoulders downward toward the center of the back, in that it consists in an adjustable transverse yoke inclined on the inside so as to pass about the neck, the opposite ends of the said yoke being widened and terminating in longitudinal front and back shoulder straps which are widened at their central portions, in order to relieve and distribute the strain across the upper part of the back and shoulders iny combination with depending devices, as button tabs.
The parts A, A', of my yoke suspender may be made of separate pieces stitched together as at a4, Fig. l, or the whole may be integral if so desired.
By the use of my yoke suspender the strain is taken in-a great measure fromthe shoulders, which Ordinarily alone support the suspenders in common use, by means of the trans'- verse part A', which crosses the upper part of the back and also assists in supporting the garment. By the use of my yoke suspender the longitudinal strips A, forming 'the susponder proper, are also held in position and prevented from slipping from ott the shoulders. f
It will be observed that the broad transverse yoke portion rests upon the top of the back 'and shoulders, the forward part of the same practically `following the line ot' the shirt yoke and band, and the rear portion extending from one shoulder blade to the other. My yoke is provided at its four extremities with button tabs, the back tabs being practically in line with the front ones, and the interior portions thereof, as a6, together with the rear portion of the yoke, asv a5, constituting the p boundary line of an interior-ly recessed portion or open space lying between the'shoulder blades and at the'smallot the back, thus rendering the suspender comfortable in use. By the above arrangement of parts the strain is distributed across the .top of the back and shouldersby means of the lines of stress (indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2) crossing each other, and the garment may also be supported, if desired, solely by the two front tabs without requiring any readjustment of the suspender. ,l
As it is evident that many changes in the construction and relative arrangement of parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention I would have it understood that I do not restrictmyself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but that I reservethe right to make such changes, and that A Vhat'I claim as new, and desire to secure by .Letters Patent, is-
l. A 4yoke suspender consisting of a broad transverse portion to rest on the top of the back and shoulders, the forward portion of the same constructed and arranged to practically follow the line of the shirt yoke and band, and provided with button tabs; the rear portion of the same extending from one shoulder blade Ato the other and having back tabs practically narrowed extremities with button tabs and l intermediate elastic portions, the said back tabs being practically in line with the front ones, to distribute the strain across the top ot the back and shoulders by means of the iines of stress crossing each other and whereby the garment may be supported, if desired, solely by the two front tabs without readjustment of the Suspenders.
In testimony of the foregoing specification I do hereby sign the same in the city ot' New York, county and State of New York, this 21st day of September, A. D. 1892.
EDVARD H. BENNERS.
