Description

m A Mm YE N mm (No Model.)
No. 541,509. Patented June 25,1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB H. SNYDER, OF CANTON, OHIO.
CLOTH ES-LIN E CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,509, dated June 25, 1895. 7
Application filed September 22, 1894. Serial No. 523,810. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB H. SNYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Clamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a view showing the clamp properly attached to a post and illustrating a clothes-line properly clamped. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the clamp proper turned at an angle other than a right angle. Fig. 3 is a view showing the top or upper end of the post, illustrating the plate-holding heads. Fig. 4: is a detached view of the plate. Fig. 5 is a View showing manner of attaching a clothesline to different posts not provided with the clamp.
The presentinvention has relation to clothes line clamps, and it consists in the difierent parts and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the post which is of any desired height and is held in an upright position in the ordinary manner.
To the post A, or its equivalent are attached the plate holding heads a, which heads may be provided with screw-threaded shanks or ordinary spikes, said heads being pro- 0 from the lower head a, or in other words the heads a, are set farenough apart to allow the plate B together with its difierent parts to be moved upward so as to disengage the lower pin or arm.
The plate B is provided with the arm 0, to
which arm is pivotally attached the bar D. The top or upper end of the bar is bifurcated, and is'provided with the roller (1. The bottom or lower end of the bar D is provided with the right angled arm 01, which right angled arm is located directly opposite the groove (1 which groove is formed in the side extension E, which side extension is preferably formed integral with the plate B.
It will be understood that by attaching the plate B as above described, that said plate is free to rock or oscillate, thereby providing for a direct strain in case the clothes line is to be carried away from the post to which the clamp is attached at an angle.
For the purpose of limiting the backward movement of the top or upper end of the bar D, the arm 0, is provided with the stop 6, which stop is so located that the inner edge of the bar D, will come in contact with said stop. The object and purpose of limiting the backward movement of the bar D, is *to prevent said bar from interfering with the adjustment of the clothes line.
In use the clothes line is placed over the roller d, and extended downward between the groove (1 and the arm (1', after which the line is drawn until it is tightened which causes the arm (2 to press againstthe line and hold the same.
In Fig. 5, I have illustrated two posts, one of which is provided with the eyes f, and the other with the pulley 9, said arrangement being desirable and convenient.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' The combination of the removable plate B, pivoted to the heads a, the arm 0 provided with the stop e, the bar D provided at its upper end with the roller d, and at its lower end with the arm d, the extension E provided with the groove 01 and means for supporting the plate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JACOB I-I. SNYDER.
Witnesses:
