IMPROVED ROPE 0B LINE-HOLDER.

TO ALL TO' WHOM THESE PREfsENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known that I, J. CHASE, of Boston, in the county of Suifolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Device for Making Fast a Line or Rope; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, due reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a top view.
Figure 2, a'side elevation.
Figure 3, an end elevation, and
Figure 4 a vertical and-longitudinal section of my invention.
The object of my present invention is to grasp and securely hold a line, or rope, at any point in its entire length, and in combining with such device or clamp a screw, or other equivalent means of fixing the implement to a post, or other object, to which it is intended to connect such line or rope.
By referring to the accompanying drawings, the dcviccwill be seen as consisting of a base or bracket, a, having secured to its inner end, in a suitable manner, a screw, 6, or other equivalent device for securing it in a horizontal position. A lip or shelf, 0, extends outward from and. makes part of the base a, this shelf 0 supporting at its outer end a swivelling-clamp or tripper, d, which straddles it, and is connected with it by a pin or fulcrum, e, in such manner as to allow of slight oscillating movements of. the said clamp. A curved stud or abutmcnt,f, is formed upon one side of the shelf a, and in rear of the clamp d, in such manner that when such end of the clamp is pressed inward the rope shall be caught and clamped between the two. Thcbulk of the shelf 0 is cut away between the studfand the bearing of the fulcrum e, in order to allow of the ready passage of therope between such points.
The operation of the above-described device'is as follows, it being understood that it is fixed to the poster other object, in the position shown in'the drawings.
To fiat" the line, the free end is passed (from the outside) over the upper end cl of the tripper d, and carried downward'and passed or-laid between the lower end of such tripper and the stud f, as shown in fig. 2 of the drawings. It will be evident that any draught upon tlle taut portion of the line will force the lower end of the tri'ppcr d toward the abutment f, and enclose the line with a forcible grasp between them, the power of this .grasp upon the line being in proportion to the amount of strain exerted upon it (the rope.) To remove the line froui'the above-described device, it is to be slackened sufiiciently to allow it to he slipped from off the upper end of the tripper d, which will at once release its hold upon such line.
The device, besides being simple, cheap, and eflective, possesses the advantage of enabling the line to be applied to it very expeditiously and easily, as it is not carried through a hole or any place deficient of access,
.this being an important advantage in the use of a clothcs -line. The fact of its being provided with a means of readily fixing it in position, and not depending upon another object to'hang it from, is an important advantage.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination with the supporting-plate or ratchet c, and stud or curved projection f, of the swivelled clump cl, under the arrangement and for operation as set forth.
, The combination withthe bracket 0, curved projection f, and swiv-elled clamp d, of the plate aand screw or equivalent fastening device, formed in one piece with said plate, substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and set forth.
A. J. CHASE.
