Be it known that I, AUGUST RICK, Jr., of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have vinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which' the following is aY full, clear, and exact description, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings,

young, said toy to possess atrick feature, said trick feature being accomplished whenever an attempt is made to operate the toy by an inexperienced person.

vvIn the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a toy constructed in accordance with my invention, parts thereof being broken away to more clearlyV illustrate the same. Fig. 2 is a top planyiew of my improved toy, a portion thereof being broken away to more clearly illustrate the same. Fig. 3'is an enlarged longitudinal sectional View taken, approximately, on the indicated line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4` is a view in perspective of a fanwheel of which I makeuse in carrying out my invention.

The main portion of my improved toy has the appearance of an ordinary wheel-barrow.

1 0 indicates the legs of the toy, the same being fixed to the handles 1, 1 and extend downwardly therefrom. Fixed to the under side of the open topped box 5 is an open ended tube l1, the forward end of which is adjacent the blades or paddles et forming the `fan-wheel previously mentioned. Adapted to slide in the other end of this tube 11 is a tube 12, the same extendingto a point slightly beyond 'the rear ends of the handles 1 and -provided in its rear end with V-shaped notches 13. h An aperture 14 is formed in the forward end of this tube 12 and coincides with Van aperture 15 formed in the trueV bottom of the open topped box 5. Extending through the tube 12 is a tube 16, the same being of a dif anneter less than is the vinterior diameter of Theforward end of this tube 1'6 is provided with au aperture 17 that registers with the coinciding apertures 14 and l5. The forward end 18 of this tube 16 is closed and the rear end 19 thereof extends to a point of the tube 12 and the V-shaped notches 13 vformed therein.

Fixed to and' extending vertically upward from the handles 1,1 between 'the forward edge of the open toppedv box 5 and the forward ends of said handles are upright bars 21, the s arne having journaled in their upper ends a shaft 22. Mounted upon this shaft 22 is a grooved wheel or pulley 23 and a pair of parallel cross-.bars 24. Journaled in the ends of these cross-bars 24 are rods or shafts 25, pivoted upon which arejointed toy figures 26, the same representing performers upon the horizontal bar.

Mounted upon the axle 2 adjacent one of the wheels 3 and in alignment with the grooved wheel or pulley 23 is a grooved wheel or pulley'27. Passingl around these grooved wheels or pulleys 23 and 27 is a cord 28, performing the function of a belt.

The space 7 between the false and true bottoms of the open topped box 5 is designed to hold ordinary iiour, starch, or analogous powdered substances. Vlhenever` the axle 2 is vbeyond the rear end of the tube 12 where it is provided with a semi-circular tip 20, the flat face of which lies directly against the end IOO rotated by reason of a blast of air from the tube 11 outo the fan-wheel, or by frictional contact of the wheels 3 with a flat surface when the toy is moved over said surface, the grooved wheel or pulley 27 mounted upon said axle will necessarily be rotated and the cord 28 running over said pulley communicates rotary motion to the grooved wheel or pulley 23 that is rigidly mounted upon the shaft 22 journaled in the top ends of the uprights 21. With the movement ot the shaft 22 the parallel cross-bars 21 will necessarily revolve, thus causing the toy figures 26 swung from the cross-bars or rods` 25 to turn, revolve and rotate in an entertaining and amusing manner.

The trick feature of the toy lies within the hollow handles l and tubes 12 and 16, to-

gether with the space 7 between the true and false bottoms of the open topped box 5, and is accomplish-ed in the following manner:

A person acquainted with the operation of the toy passes the tip 2O upon the end of the tube 16 and adjacent the end ofthe tube 12 in the mouth in such a manner that the lips contact with the exterior of the tube 12 at a point past the V-shaped notches 13 in the end of said tube 12. By now placing thetip of the tongue over the end 19 f the tube 16 and blowing in the ordinary manner, a blast or draft ofair will pass through the V- shaped notches 13, through the tubes 12 and 11 and be discharged directly upon the blades or paddles of the fan-wheel. This ldraft or blast of air being of sufficient volume will rof tate the fan-wheel and other movable parts in the manner hereinbet'ore described. By this manner of blowing no draft or blast of air will pass through the tube 16 and tothe space 7 between the false and true bottoms of the open topped box 5.

lVhen an attempt is iliade to operatethe toy by an inexperienced person, said person will naturally put the tip 20 to his lips and not put the tip ot' the tongue over the end 19 of the tube 16. Adraft or blast of air blown by said inexperienced person will pass directly through the tube 16, through the coinciding apertures 17, 14 and 15 and to the space 7 bef tween the false and true bottoms of the op'en topped box 5. Said draft or blast of air will necessarily agitate the powdered contents of the space 7 and from thence pass outwardly through the apertures 9 in the sides of the open topped box 5 and through the bores 8 in the handles 1. The draft or blast of air being ladened with a portion of the contents of the space 7 will be discharged directly from the ends of the handles 1 into the face of the inexperienced person.

A toy of this construction is ornamental, entertaining and amusing and can be produced at a minimum cost.

1. A toy, comprising a pair of handles, the rear ends ot' which are hollow, a motor-wheel having blades, an open topped box mounted upon said handles and having a false bottom, said hollow handles communicating with the Space between the false and true bottoms, a tube fixed to the underside of the open topped box and provided with V-shaped notches in its outer end, the forwardend of which is ar ranged to direct a blast of air on said motorwhe'el, anda tube extending longitudinally within the first mentioned tube, the fo ward end of which communicates with the `space between the true and false bottoms, said inner tube being provided on its end with a semicircular tip, the ilat face of which lies adjacent the end of the outer tube and the V- shaped notches therein.

2. A toy, comprising a pair of handles, the rear ends of which are hollow, an open topped receptacle provided with a false bottom located upon said handles, the hollow ends of the handles communicating with the space between the false and true bottoms of said box, an axle journaled in the forward ends ot' the handles, a fan-wheel mounted ou said axle, a pair of upright bars fixed to the forward ends of the handles, a shaft journaled in the upper ends of said uprights, parallel cross-bars fixed to said shaft, cross-shafts in vthe ends of `said parallel cross-bars, jointed toy figures pivoted to said cross-shafts, suit- ICC of theinner tube adjacentthe end of the outer tube and the notches therein.
