HALTER TRIMMING.
No. 540,770. Patented-June 11, 1-895.
' INVENTOR ATTORNEY5.
HNITED STATES ATENT OFFI E.
HILORIUS E. WILDERMUTH, COLUMBUS, OHIO..
HALTER-TRIMMING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,770, dated June 11, 1895. Application filed April 16, 1894- Serlalll'o. 507,678. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HILORIOUS E. WILDER- MUTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, haveinvented a certain new and useful Improvement in Halter-Trimmings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in halter trimmings of that class which are designed to couple together the various parts of the halter and has particular relation to the improvement of the device for which-Letters Patent No. 252,500 were issued on the 17th day of January, 1882.
The object of the present invention is to provide a more reliable and effective trimming or coupling which consists in improvements in the details of construction which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter.
, I accomplish the object of my invention in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a portion of the nose-strap and portions of the cheek-strap, which are connected therewith by means of my improved trimming. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the trimming or coupling device. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 00 00 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of said device.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the construction of my improved trimwing or coupling, I employ a metallic oblong frame ahaving parallel sides and ends, said ends being, as shown, inclined to a slight degree from a right angled position with the sides. The nose I; or one end of the coupling is formed by having the width of the frame slightly decreased andthe end inclined downward, the latter feature being indicated in Fig. 2 of the'drawings. As indicated at c the opposite end portion of the'coupling has, un-
nally in the same plane therewith to a point beneath the end portion 0 of the coupling a bar or arm 6, the latter having formed therein at a point near said end portion 0 a laterally enlarged portionf. At the center of the width of the cross bar dand center of the length of the arm e, I provide respectively upwardly projecting pins or studs g and h.
As indicated in section in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the longer side arms a of the coupling body are inclined outward and downward. As indicated atz'the inner side or edge of one of the side frame pieces a is cut away for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
The manner of utilizing my invention for the connection of one of the ends of the cheek strap kwith that portion k of the nose strap which is looped as indicated to hold in the usual manner a buckle k is substantially as follows: The end of the strap is inserted within the frame a, said strap end passing beneath the end of the nose I) and over the pin hole which is adapted'to receive the lip-- wardly projecting stud h of the bar 6.
It will be observed that owing to'the incline of the frame side pieces a, the strap portions which pass beneath the same will be depressed as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, this depression operating to prevent the strapslipping off the retaining stud.
It will be observed that the substantially square shoulder formed by the horizontal end portion 0 of the frame, will provide a side bearing for the strap ka'nd operate to prevent any lateral movement of said strap in that direction. It Will also be observed that the depression of the nose portion b will in a like manner operate to produce a slight inward or downward bend of the strap 70, which will serve to hold the latter in engagement with the studs.
In forming or coupling the trimming frames or bodies,1 provide two patterns, one having the ends thereof inclined in one direction and the other having said ends inclined in the opposite direction, thus producing What may be termed rights and lefts which are adapted to be used on opposite sides of the halter and which impart to the cheek straps the desired angle with the nose strap. H
By means of the enlargementfat the inner end of the bar e, an additional bearing surface for the inner end of the strap is is produced which will operate to prevent any displacement of the latter. is formed on the inner edge of one of the bars or provides more room for the insertion of doubled strap portions on that side where'the thickness is greatest.
Experience has demonstrated that. the variations in the construction herein shown and described over that of the device described and claimed in said former patent, are necessary for a more complete and perfect operation of the trimming or coupling and that by the use of these improvements no necessity exists for the employment of any other fastenings of the halter portions such as rivets, 850.
Although I have described the connection The depression 1; which of the nose strap and one end of the cheek strap, it is evident that other parts of the halter may be connected and the trimming employed in substantially the same manner.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A harness trimming consisting of a frame having parallel side and end bars, the side bars a a being inclined downwardly from their inner to their outeredges and being also bent downwardly at one extremity to bring one end barb below the plane of their inner edges, the upper edge of the other end bar 0 being in substantially the same plane as the inner edges of the side bars, a cross bar (1 connected to the side bars and depressed below the body of the frame, an arm e connecting the cross bar and the end bar 0, said arm being in the same horizontal plane as the cross bar, and studs projecting from the cross bar and the arm, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
HILORIUS E. WVILDERMUTII.
