F. W. SWIGART.
BUCKLE.
No. 502,787. I Patented Aug. 8, 1893.
m m; v 1 a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
FRANK W. SWIGART, OF ARROYO GRANDE, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO T. A. DRANGAAND A. BRI EGER, OF SAME PLACE.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,787, dated August 8, 1893.
Application filed May 29, 1893.
To all whom it mag concern.-
Be it known thatI, FRANK WpSWIGART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arroyo Grande, in the county ofSan Luis Obispo and State of California, have invented a new and useful Buckle, of which the following is a specification. V
My invention relates to improvements in buckles, the objects in view being to provide a buckle that may be readily cast of malleable iron, which is strong and durable and which is adapted to be attached to a strap without the necessity of sewing or riveting, or the employment of any tools whatever, whereby should a break occur repair may be made without delay and expense.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will appear in thelfollowing description and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings:Figure 1 is a perspective view of a buckle, a strap being located therein, said buckle being constructed in accordance withmy invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Like numerals of reference'indicate like, parts in both figures of the drawings.
In practicing my invention I form an oblong buckle frame 1, preferably casting the same of malleable iron, and provide said frame near its ends with openings 2 and 3. By the production of the opening 2 a transverse end bar 4 is formed, and by the production of the opening 3a rear end bar 5 is formed. The buckle frame in rear of the opening 2 is provided with a perforation 6, and in the same is loosely hung a tongue 7. The rear end bar 5 is provided at its inner side with a pair of curved V -shaped teeth 8 which extend beyond the plane ofthe buckleframe. At the center of the opening 3 there is formed a cross-bar 9, the same being slightly depressed and provided with a central curved I gradually reduced stud 10 upon its outer side. Upon the upper side of the buckleframe immediately in rear of the opening 2a keeper 11 is formed, andasimilar'keeper 12 is formed $eria] No. 475,881. (No model.)
upon the under side of the buckle frame in advance of the opening 3. I
13 designates the strap, the same having the usual perforations, and in order to efiect a connection between the strap and buckle frame, the free end of the former is passed under or back of the bar 5, between it and the central bar. 9, over the central bar 9, between the central bar and the opening 3, under the buckle frame, and into the keeper 1-2. The stud 10 of the bar 9 engages with a convenient perforation in the strap, and the curved pointed teeth 8 bind upon the upper side of the strap, and the same is prevented from rising and disengaging with the stud.
From the foregoing description it Will be seen that I have produced a buckle of very simple construction, and one which may be readily cast, the same being adapted for ready connection with any ordinary strap and to be adjusted along the strap, and that I avoid in its application the employment of either rivets or stitches.
Having described my invention, what I claim is The herein described improved buckle, the same consisting of the oblong plate having the openings 2 and 3 formed adjacent to its front and rear ends respectively, and formed with the end bars 4 and 5, the latter being provided with the inwardly curved teeth 8, the central cross-bar 9 located in the opening 3, depressed below the same, and provided upon its upper side at its center with the curved tapered stud 10, the buckle tongue 7 hung in the opening 2, and the inner and outer keepers 11 and 12 formed in rear and in advance of their respective openings 2 and 3, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK W. SWIGAR'I.
