To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. VAN CL-EEF, of Ithaca, in the county of Tompkins, in the. State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp- Filling Attachments, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to devices for facilitating the filling of lamps.

My object is to produce a device for automatically holding a wick out of the way and also indicating the rise of the oil when filling the lamp, cheap and durable in its construction and of great utility; and to that end my invention consists in the several new and novel features and combination of parts hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which-' Figure 1 shows a side view of a lamp provided with my attachment for automatically holding the wick out of engagement and showing the rise of'the oil in the lamp. A- is a bracket constructed from a piece of sheet metal or wire, formed by first bending it centrally to form a loop a, thence bending the sides as shown at -bfor the purpose of forming shoulders, one end being thence bent forming a shoulder or foot e, and the side thus bent having a lug d formed thereon, at or near the shoulder -b. This lug may be formed by cutting the side of the strip of metal and turning it up at right angles, as shown.

'eis a rod having a float f secured thereon upon which it is adapted to travel, being limited in its upward travel by the lug or arm dand its lower end by the shoulder -c-. This float -f is provided with a metallic tube g interiorly, or may have cilitate its travel upon the rod d--.

The float f is constructed of cork, or any other material desired, and is preferably provided on its upper end with a piece of white celluloid hor any other material, so that it may be readily seen as it approaches the top of the lamp, when the lamp is being filled.

In Fig. 3, Ishow a somewhat modified form of construction by simply dispensing with the shoulder or lug dand lengthening the rod eand passing it through the top of the bracket -A-, as shown at i.

It will be observed that in operating the device I first press the lower ends of the bracket A together and insert them into the top of the lamp, allowing one of the sides of the bracket to come into engagement with the wick,which forces it to the side of the'lamp and holds it there, as shown in Fig. 1. The oil is then poured in unobstructed by the wick, and when it is nearly full the float rises upon the rod -e and presents its upper end to View. It will be observed also that the rod and float may be dispensed with and the bracket used as a wick-holder.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a lamp filling attachment, a removable support formed of a bent elastic piece of sheet metal, which is adapted to have its two ends inserted into the opening in the lamp bowl from above, and which "forms a clamp to hold the burner in position while the lamp is being filled, combined with a float that is attached to one end of the support, the central portion of the sheet metal forming a handle by means of which the support is inserted into and removed from position, substantially as shown.

2. A device for facilitating the filling of lamps, comprising a bracket having lateral shoulders, a foot or shoulder upon one of said arms, a rod connecting said foot with the apex of the bracket, and a float adapted to travel thereon.

3. A lamp filling attachment composed of an elastic piece of metal which is bent double any other metallic lining desired, so as to fa- 5o so that its two ends can be inserted into the lamp bowl from above, the central portion of the metal forming a handle by means of which the attachment is operated; combined with a float that is attached to one prong or end of the attachment; both prongs or ends being provided with bends or shoulders and adapted to serve as a clamp for the wick, so as to hold the burner in position while the bowl is being filled, substantially as set forth.
