BACK-BAND BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,955, dated May 28, 1895.

To all whom itmaty concern Be it known that I, CHARLES C. KROUSE, a citizenof the United States of America, residing at Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Band Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

. My said invention relates to back band buckles of the class shown in the patent of Archer, No. 300,430, granted by the United Stgates Patent Office on the 17th day of June, 1 84.

The invention consists in details of construction whereby the mate'rialand cost of making are lessened and the appearance of the buckle is improved, although the principle of construction is the same as that shown in said Archer patent, and is retained in my improved buckle herein described.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a plan View of the buckle in a closed position, and Fig. 2 shows alike view of the buckle when opened. Fig. 3 shows a section on line a, a of Fig. 1.

The device shown in the drawings includes a frame A, which is stamped or otherwise formed out of a single piece of stout sheet metal. In the upper and lower part of the buckle are slots '1 and 2 for the band. The metal of the frame being cut round these slots so as to form loops, is calculated to retain the band in place under the grip of the buckle. Between these slots is the bearing plate 3 of the frame and at the ends of this plate are ears 4, 4, formed on the ends of the plate, perforated and turned up at right angles to the plate.- Onthelower edge of the frame and below the slot 2 is a hook 5, formed out of a tongue out from the sheet of metal which forms the frame and turned up to form a hook, which holds the chain or trace of the harness.

The clamp of the buckle consists of a piece B out also out of a sheet of stout metal and in a single piece. Thebearing edge 6 is servided with a tongue 13, which engages with the upper end of the hook and is also bent down at an intermediate point 10 so as to bear upon the frame when the end of the tongue is in engagement with the hook asshown more clearly in Fig. 3. This bend of the tongue not only serves to afford a limit to the inward movement of the tongue and causes it to accurately register with the end of the hook, but it also serves to limit the upward movement of the chain or trace. The clamp is so formed and adjusted as to turn the teeth slightly aside when it is down, as is usual with this form of buckle clamp. The band overlies the plate and passes down through the loops under the frame parts 11 and 12 and therefore also underlies the hook. The teeth engage with the band in the usual manner. The tongue 13 engages with the hook by abutting against the end of the hook, and as the downward bend, which bears upon the plate or loop is above the end the hook space is thereby enlarged.

I claim- A buckle consistingof a plate or frame having band slots, and a hook formed by the turned up end of the tongue on the end of said plate, in combination with a clamp pivoted in ears on the frame, said clamp having a central tongue bent at the point 10 to bear on CHARLES C.
