SAFETY PIN. No. 361,886. Patented Apr. 26, 1887.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. BENTON NICHOLS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SAFETY-PIN.
EPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,886, dated April 26, 1887.
Application filed July 15, 1886. Serial No. 208,058. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J. BENTON NioHoLs, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Pins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention relates to safety-pins of that class provided with a loop; and it consists in the peculiar construction of the pin, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention is illustrated in the accompa nying drawing, which represents a plan view of a safety-pin constructed in accordance with my invention.
It has been common to attach to the back or pin bar of the pin a metallic loop,or a metallic plate formed with a slot to receive a strap. This plate or loop being made separate, it requires time to attach it,-which adds to the cost of the device, and the metal surrounding the loop or slot is apt to cut and fray the strap or web passed through it. I avoid this latter difficulty and cheapen the production of the pin forming the loop of wire by making a coil in the wire of which the pin is formed.
In the drawing, B is the shield, to which is secured one end of the wire a. This wire is bent, as usual, to form the coil 1) and pin A; but intermediate of the shield and coil the said wire is bent to form the loop 0.
A pin thus constructed is cheap of production and durable, and the loop 0, being formed of round wire, will not tear or wear the strap I or web passed through it.
I am aware of the Patent No. 323,759, and make no claim to the construction shown therein as forming part of my invention.
I attach importance to the fact that the loop 0 be formed independent of the coil 1), and between said coil and the point of attachment of the wire a to the shield B, as this construction gives greater resiliency to the pin without in any wise affecting or distorting the loop a.
What I claim is As an improved article of manufacture, the safety-pin described, formed of a single piece of wire, havingone end secured to a shield and its other end forming a pin, said wire being bent to form a coil, b,'and a flat loop, a, independent of said coil and between the same and the point of attachment of the wire to the shield, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
J. BENTON NICHOLS.
