Patented May 28, 1895.

being had to the accompanying drawings,
of the outer end of a broom-handle, showing UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUSH W. CARRINGTON, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- THIRD TO E. A. PRICKETT, OF SAME PLACE.
ATTACHMENT FOR BROOM-STAFFS OR OTHER HANDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,793,!13117611 May 28, 1 895.
Application filed February 8, 1895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUsH W. CARRINGTON, of Kansas City, Jackson county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Broom-Staffs, or other Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to attachments for handles 'or staffs, and the object of my invention is'to provide an attachment in the form of a swinging arm, which is adapted to be pivotally secured to the tip end of a broom-handle, and so arranged that when it is not in use it can be folded into the broom handle, without leaving any portion thereof to obstruct the free use of the user of the broom.
A further object of my invention is to provide an attachment for handles or staifs which shall be adapted for the raising and lowering of window-sashes, and removing pictureframes, which usually are hung upon the walls of the house, and also an attachment which is applicable to lighting and turning oif the gas from the various kinds of gas-jets used for lighting purposes. A
A still further object which I have in viewis to provide an attachment of this character forbroom-handles which is simple, strong, durable, and inexpensive of construction.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will-now proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion my invention attached thereto- Fig. 2 is a Vertical sectional view showing my invention folded or in its closed position in the handle or staff when not in use.
The dotted lines a, b, and 0, indicate the various positions that the swinging arm sustains to the broom-handle when performing the various functions for which I have intended it.
1 designates a handle or stafi, with a groove 2 cut by any suitable means for the reception of the swinging arm 6, which is pivoted at 4 through the swell or inner end 7, which holds the swinging arm in position to the broomhandle.
It will be seen at 3, Fig. 2, that I have pro- Serial No. 537,682- (No model.)
vided an opening horizontally through the in displacing and replacing picture-frames,
small mirrors, &c.
9 is a projecting lug or stud, which is adapted for raising and lowering windowsashes, as indicated by dotted lines. Seen in Fig. 2.
10 is a groove in the outer end of the swinging arm, which is adapted to be engaged over the thumb-screw connected to a gas-jet to turn the gas on or off. Between the extreme end of the book 8 and one of the jaws of the groove 10, is a V-shaped notch 11. This is adapted to receive one end of a lighting-match, and by this means the gas may be lighted where the jet is too high to be reached with a match held in the hand of an individual.
From the above description, it will be apparent that I have produced an attachment in combination with a broom-staff which is simple, strong, durable, and inexpensive of construction, susceptible of durability, and easy of manipulation.
Having thus described my invention, what I'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An implement comprising an arm which is pivotally attached to one end of a handle or stafi, and the outer end of said implement provided with a hook on one edge and with a lug or stud at its opposite edge, and agroove adapted to engage the thumb-screw of a gasjet, and a V-shaped groove adapted to engage one end of 'a match, asset forth and described. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
