SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,709, dated May 21, 1895.

To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, JAMES T. SHORT,Of Louis ville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Pads; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in harness pads, and it consists of an outer casing or cover and an inner separable inflatable bag.
It further consists of an outer casin g having a transverse opening located near its longitudinal center and an inflatable bag adapted to be inserted within said casing; and itfurther consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a view showing the outer casing and the inflatable bag separated.
Arepresents the outer casing, which is preferably composed of a top face of leatherB or other comparatively stiff material and a bottom face of cloth or equivalent soft material 0, the two faces being united at their edges. One face, preferably the bottom face 0 is provided with an opening b, preferably located midway between and at right angles to the ends of said bottom face 0, and is designed to admit of the insertion of inflatable bag D within casing A.
The inflatable bag D is constructed of any suitable air tight material and is preferably divided midway its length into two air tight compartments 0, (1. These compartments are separated as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Entering each of said compartments is a short tube f, the opposite ends of said tubes terminating in a valve chamber 9 within which isdocated an ordinary check valve, by means of which the escape of air is prevented. Dust or other foreign substances is excluded from chamber g by means of the screw cap it.
When the inflatable bag D is in its normal position or in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the valve chamber 9 and a portion of its connected parts are "adapted to pass up the air tight compartmentscc, cl, and hence it will be seen that the thickness of the pad at this point is materially reduced, which permits the pad to accommodate itself to the back of a horse more closely than could be accomplished by a pad wherein the inflatable bag contained but one compartment.
It will be seen from Fig. 3 that the casing A and inflatable bag D are constructed separate and independent of each other, which constitutes one of the important features of the present invention. By thus constructing the above parts, a more simple and inexpensive harness pad is produced, which is not liable to wear rapidly and when worn can be easily repaired. I
The bag can be readily removed for repairs and replaced without injuring the casing and without the employment of tools or skilled labor.
It is evident that changes in the construction and relative arrangement of the several parts might be made without avoiding my in- I vention and hence I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with an outer casing and facing connected together at the edges to constitutetwo bags which open at a common central point, of an inflatable bag the ends of which enter and are'removably secured in this bag, substantially as set forth.
