Description

UNITED STATES PATENT Eric..
ISAAC H. WAIT, 0F OTISCO, MICHIGAN.
SASH SUPPORTER AND FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known thatI, ISAAC H. WAIT, of Otisco,
in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash Holders and Fasteners for Railroad- Gar Windows and otherwise; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clearand exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings, in which- Figure l represents the invention as applied to the holding of window sash of any kind, and Fig. 2 represents its application to a sash for locking or fastening it so that it cannot be moved up or down.
I am aware that a weighted lever has been used as a sash-holder. This, individually considered, I do not claim.
My invention consists in combining with a weighted or. overpoised lever a hook or claw pivoted thereto, so that it may be used for holding` up a sash or for completely locking or fastening it, so that it cannot, from the outside, be moved either up or down.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
A represents a window-frame, to which the holder and fastener B is pivoted, as at a, and C represents a sash which is to be held or locked thereby at any desired point.
The arm b of the fastener or pivoted overpoised lever B has upon it a hook or jaw, c, which turns slightly upward; and there is pivoted, also, to said arm b, as at e, another claw or hook, t', the jaw of which turns slightly downward.
On the sash, and arranged so as to move in the line of the hooks on the fastener or lever B, there are a series of screw-heads,f, or their equivalents, over and under which the jaws of the hooks 4i c may, respectively, take to hold thc sash from being moved up or down, or up only, as the case may be. When the pivoted hook t is swung back out of action, as shown in Fig. l, then the sash can he run up and held up by the hook c, which will take under one of the screw-heads or other equivalent fastening or holding device; but when the hook or jaw t' is swung forward so as to come within the influence of the stops or holders f, it will catch over the top of the l holder j', while the other, c, takes hold underneath the holder, and in this condition, as shown in Fig. 2, the sash is immovable either up or down,so that the device serves'the purpose of a holder or of a lock, Whichever may be desired.
The weighted or overpoised portion of' the lever B causes the arm b, that carries thelhooks, to keep close to or in contact with the sash, and when the hooks have hold of the screwhead f, or other similarly-acting device, the sash cannot be moved, because the lever B cannot swing upon its pivot, and any attempt to move the sash under such circumstances is taken on and resisted by the pivot a, which is in nearly a vertical plane above the hooks or jaws.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Combining with an overpoised lever, B, pivoted to the window-frame, and having a permanent hook or jaw, o, upon it, a second pivoted hook or jaw, i, and so made as that one or both of said hooks may act in connection with a holder or holders, f j', on the sash, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein described and represented.
