SLEEVE-PROTECTOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N 0. 538,805, dated May 7, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDGAR A. WILHELMI, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff and SleeveP-rotectors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention has for its object to provide a simple and efiicient protector by means of which persons may be enabled to use their hands in water, or to wash them without wetting or soiling their sleeves and cuffs, and without being obliged to remove their outer garments, and saidinvention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a face view of my improved cod and sleeve protector. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modified construction. Fig. 3 is a section thereof, the same being taken on the line 3 3; and Fig. 4 is a view showing the protector in position upon the wrist of the user.

In the drawings-A designates the protector consisting of a hard vulcanized rubber frame B, elliptical in form, having a covering of elastic rubber O thereon provided with an oblong aperture D which extends from a point near the center thereof to a point near the frame B at the top of the shield, the elastic covering 0 being made thick near its outer edge, and becoming thinner, and consequently more elastic as it approaches the aperture D.

In the construction illustrated by Figs. 2

and 3, the protector consists of a frame B having an elastic rubber covering 0 thereon of equal thickness throughout provided with an aperture D, and a series of gradually tapering ribs E, integral with the elastic covering 0, beginning at the inner edge of the frame 13, and converging toward the aperture D near which they lose themselves. By means "or these ribs E, the thickest portions of which are along the inner edge of the frame B, the covering 0 will be rendered stiff at that place, and as the said ribs become thinner as they near the aperture D the covering becomes more pliable and elastic.

When it is desired to use the protectors it simply becomes necessary to insert the hands through the apertures in the coverings, and then force the same back upon the wrists or forearms to a place Where they will be firmly held. By means of these protectors the water will thenbe prevented from reaching the sleeves or cuffs and wetting the same.

It will be observed that I have shown and described the protector as being constructed wholly of ,rubber vulcanized to various degrees of hardness, and as being elliptical in form. I do not, however, limit myself thereto as the frame may be made of metal or other suitable material of any desired size and shape, and covered with any water-proof sub; stance provided with an aperture, and made sufiiciently large and elastic at that place to admit the hands, and be held firmly upon the 'wrists or forearms, after being forced back.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A cuff and sleeve protector comprising a frame and a Waterproof covering secured thereon, provided with an aperture, said covering being flexible and elastic along the edge of said aperture, and becoming stiffer and less elastic as it nears the frame, substantially as specified.

2. A cuff and sleeve protector comprising a frame and a water-proof covering secured thereon, having an aperture therein, and a series of radial stiffening ribs arranged between said aperture and the frame, said water-proof covering being flexible and elastic along the edge of the aperture, and becoming stifier and less elastic as it nears the frame, substantially as specified.

8. A cuff and sleeve protector comprising a frame, and a yielding water-proof covering secured thereon having an aperture therein, and a series of gradually tapering ribs beginning at the inner edge of the frame and converging toward said aperture, substantially as specified.
