FASTENING DEVICE FOR NECKTIES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,375, dated April 30, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES JUNGMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Neckties, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in fastening devices for neck ties, and consists in the novel device hereinafter described and claimed secured upon the external inner face of the tie and adapted to engage the end of the neck-band of the tie and securely hold the latter in place.

The fastening made the subject hereof consists of an exposed body secured at one end to the material of the tie and at the other end provided with a pin to pierce the tie, said end being free and adapted to be conveniently drawn outward from or pressed toward the surface of the tie, whereby to free the pin from the neck band or cause said pin to engage the same.

The object of the invention is to provide the tie with exterior means which may with great convenience be quickly operated to fasten the tie in position or to entirely release the neck-band so that the tie may be removed without difficulty.

The nature and operation of my fastening device will be more fully understood from the detailed explanation hereinafter given, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a necktie employing a fastening device constructed in accordance with and embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view, partly broken away, of same. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the fastening device detached from the scarf and shown on an enlarged scale, and Fig. 4 is an edge view of same.

In the drawings, A designates the usual neck-tie having the neck-band B, whose free end is adapted to be passed through the customary opening formed in the head or knot of the tie to receive it. Upon the inner side of the head of the tie is secured the fastening device 0, which has an elongated fiat body or provided at one end with the securing lugs b, b, and rearwardly projecting lug cl, and at its other end with the curved pin 6, whose shank end is secured by being passed through the aperturesfif, in the body aand turned under against the inner surface of said body. The lugs b, l) are utilized to secure the body a at one end to-the fabric of the tie, leaving the other end of said body free to be pulled outward from or pressed toward the tie-the fabric yielding at the lugs 12, b to permit this movement of the said body a. The extreme free end of the body a has the outwardly turned lip g, which affords a convenient means of enabling the thumb or finger to draw the end of the body an outward from the tie.

WVhen it is desired to apply the tie, the wearer will draw the free end of the body a outward until the pin e is substantially clear of the tie, and thereafter the tie being in position the end of the band B after the latter has been passed around the neck will be inserted through the usual opening in the tie until the latter is in the position desired, whereupon the wearer with the hand in the usual position holding the tie will press the free end of the body a against the fabric, thus causing the pin 6 to pierce the band B and securely hold the tie in place.

In removing the tie, the wearer will take hold of the tie with one hand and with the thumb thereof draw the free end of the body a outward to remove the pin e, thereby fully releasing the band B and permitting the latter to be freely and instantly withdrawn. .The lug d in a limited measure opposes the outward movement of the free end of the body a and by pressing against the fabric at such time creates a tension in said body toward the tie. The lug cl also prevents the body a from being drawn outward unduly, and hence at all times the body a and pin 6 will be found in convenient position for use.

The invention is not limited to any special style of neck tie or analogous article of neckwear, nor in every instance is it limited to the special pin shown in the drawings, since for a cheaper fastening the pin may be stamped out in one piece with the body a.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
