FAN ATTACHMENT F OR SEWING-MACHINES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,766, dated April 16, 1 895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HALL, of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fan Attachments for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. 1

My invention relates to a fan adapted to be connected to the fly wheel of a sewing machine, and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.

Figure I is a front elevation, partly in section of the fly wheel of a sewing machine, with my improved fan connected thereto. Fig. II is a side elevation of the fly wheel and fan. Fig. III is a detail view of one of the Wings of the fan,'and of portions of the wingsupporting ring and one of the legs. Fig. IV is a detail view of a portion of the wing supporting ring. Fig. V is a sectional view, taken on line VV, Fig. III. Fig. V1 is a sectional view, taken on line VI-VI, Fig. III. Figs. VII and VIII are respectively side and edge views of the fasteners employed to connect the wings, legs and supporting ring.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the fly wheel of a sewing machine, to which my improved fan is adapted to be connected.

2 represents a ring of less diameter than the fly wheel, and to which are connected legs 3, that are preferably bowed outward from the ring, and whose ends are concavein form, so as to fit the interior of the rim of the fiy wheel, they being held in contact with the rim of the wheel by their elasticity, which, after allowing their ends to be sprung inward, throws them out into close contact with the rim of the wheel.

4: represents the fan wings, which are preferably provided with flanges 5, and which are feathered to the desired angle, in order to throw a blast of air toward the operator of the sewing machine.

within small compass, andnot be liable to become damaged, as is the case with articles of this class when they are shipped or stored in their using condition are as follows: The fastening consists in forming, in the manufacture, slots or non circular openings 6, through the fan wings, the rings 2 and the legs 3, and inserting through the slot in each piece, a fastener 7, havingahead 8 and points 9, and after insertion, bending the points9 of the fastener down, as clearly shown in Fig. VI.

The whole fan may be readily constructed, ready for putting together, and owing to the simple construction of the device, the purchaser has no difficulty in readily placing the parts together and inserting the fastener 7, and bending'its points down by the use any ordinary tool.

By making the openings 6 in which the fastenings fit non circular they will have to be made to register before the fastenings can be applied. This insures against the possibility of an inexperienced person putting the wings on at an improper angle, and when the fan is put together for use, it will be in condition to alford the best results.

As there are some machines constructedin which the fly wheel moves in one direction,

and some in which the fly wheel moves in the opposite direction, I construct Wings that are suitable to throw the air in the desired direction when the wheel is turning in one direction, and other wings designed to be used when the fly wheel of the machine turns in the opposite direction, the wingsin each case being adapted to be connectedby the same fastening, and to the same ring and legs.

I claim as my invention l A fan attachment for sewing machines, consisting of a ring 2, wings 4, legs 3, provided with non-circular openings, and flat fastenings '7 fitting insaid openings and adapted to secure said parts together, and prevent relative movement thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
