UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
SIDNEYl B. MOODY, OF HARWIOH, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- THIRD TO RINALDO ELDRIDGE, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,061, dated April 9, 1895.
Application filed January 7, 1895. Serial No. 534,108. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/cern..- Y
Be it known that I, SIDNEY B. MOODY, of Harwich, in the county of Barnstable, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ooal-Hods, of which the following is a description suiiiciently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science'to which said invention appertains to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- 1 Figure l is a side elevation of my improved coal hod; and Fig. 2 the rear elevation of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures of the drawings.
My invention relates especially to a combination coal hod, shovel and tire-stick holder, the object being particularly to produce a cheap, simple and effective device of this char acter.
A further object of my invention is to overcome the objections incident to the shape of many coal hods nowA in use wherewith it is necessary to oscillate or shake the hod to discharge the coal into the door of the stove.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the hod which is cylindrical in form. The upper end of said body is beveled or cut away diagonally at f, forming the nose, g. Oentrally of the body ateach side a pin, h, is fast. A wire rod is'turned around' one of these pins and its end fis looped to form an eye, j. Thence said rodis carried horizontally at k, and projected beyond the rear of the hod The rod is bent vertically at lm, thence carried horizontally across the rear ofthe hod at p, then bent vertically downward at q, and carried horizontally to the companion pin,h, its end being bent to form the second eye, j. The bail, C, is pivoted in said eyes. Said bail is provided with the ordinary wooden handle, i".
A wire rod is bent to form a loop handle,l t,
near the bottom of the hod, the arms of said rod being coiled around studs, fu, on the hod and its ends being carried diagonally upward and secured at yw, to the horizontal portion, p, of the first wire or rod. These ends, fr, form braces for the rack which comprises angles, m, q. This rack is designed to hold a tire-stick or poker, y. There is sufficient space between the surface of the hod and the horizontalportion, p, of said wire -to admit a tire shovel, D, the blade of which engages behind the arms, and rests on the studs, c.
In use, the handle, is grasped by the left hand of the operator and the hod can readilyy be tilted by means of the handle, t, near its bottom. The circular formof the hod greatly assists in discharging the coal and avoids the necessity of shaking the hod in order to cause the contents to roll into the stove mouth.
I do not contine myself to forming the Vbracket and shovel holder of a continuous piece of wire.
VHaving thus explained my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a coal-hod a cylindrical body; a bail pivoted thereto; an angle bracket projecting rearwardly from the bail-pivots and forming a fire-stick holder; braces connecting the bracket with the lower portion of the hod .forming a shovel-holder allY being combined and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
2. In a coal hod, a cylindrical body, and angular bracket secured thereto and comprising a rod bent to form eyes at its junction-with said body; a bail pivoted in said eyes; brace rods connecting said bracket with the lower `portion of said hod and forming a shovel holder.
. 3. In a coal hod,the cylindrical body in combination with the wire bracket having the angleiarms, m, g, and forming eyes, j; the bail pivoted in said eyes; a rod connecting saidL bracket with studs on the lower portion of said hod; said rod being bent to forma handle, t, and the arms, w, thereof forming a shovel holder, substantially. as described.
SIDNEY B. MOODY.
