Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE@ H. E. SCOTCHMER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVED SHOE-BRUSH.
Specifica-tion forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,659, dated April 3, 1866.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, H. E. SCOTCHMER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a novel and useful Combined Pocket Shoe or Boot Brush and Blacking-Box; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the: accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
This invention is intended for making a blacking-brush in such a way as to take it into several separate parts and, by packing them into a case together with a blaeking-box, make it convenient to carry the whole of the blacking` apparatus in a pocket, trunk, valise, 85e.
To enable others to understand and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
The brush consists of three parts-the main body of the brush, square or oblong, A; the little brush for blacking, also square or oblong` B and the handle, C. On the main brush A there are two dovetailed slots, D D, tted with brass or other metal. On the little brush B and the handle C there are dovetailed projections E E, to tit into the slots D D; The slots being square and the projections slightly conical, the attachment of the handle and of the little brush to the main brush may be made tight enough for blacking purposes.
The blaeking-box may be made square or oblong out of tin or any other metal, with or without a cover.
rEhe case, with its cover, to pack into, different parts of the brush, and the blacking-box, may be made square or oblong, and may be made out of paper, papier-mache, tin, or any other substance.
The things are packed into the ease in the folloivn g Way: First is put lengthwise the large brush A, and on its top the little brush B; then the handle C is dropped down by their side, and on the top of the whole is put the blacking-box.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pocket or travelers blacking-case provided with a brush having the handle and small brush detachable, and a blacking-box arranged to pack within the case,substantial1y as shown and described.
