UNITED. STATES PAT NT OFFICE...
CHARLES E. VAN NORMAN, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
COVERED FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming art of Iletters Patent No. 536,164, dated March 19, 1895.
' Application filed November 21, 1894 Serial No. 529,528. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. VAN N OR- MAN, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Covered Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top-plan view, and Fig. 2 a side view of one form of fastening device, namely, an eyelet, embodying my invention, on a greatly enlarged scale, and without the covering, for the sake of greater clearness. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section of the eyelet shown in Figs. .1 and 2 with the covering. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view, in cross-section,of an eyelet and covering dies, this view particularly illustrating the function of the flange feet with which fastening devices embodying my'invention are provided. Fig. 5 shows my invention embodied in a lacing stud, and Fig. 6 shows it embodied in a button.
My invention relates to a great variety of fastening devices and parts thereof that are covered in whole or in part with various compounds, such as celluloid or rubber, for example; and the objects of my invention are to facilitate the manufactureiof these cov-' ered fasteners and to secure an improved product.
My invention consists, broadly, in a fastener-body formed with a flange having, on its under side, feet which are within the perimeter of the flange; and also, broadly, in the combination of a fastener-body of said character with a cover of any desired compound.
A minor feature of my invention lies in slitting the body, so that the compound on the outside of the flange is united with the compound, on the inside of the fastener-body by portions of the compound lyingin the slits, these bonds of union between the outside and inside deposits of covering compound being within the perimeter of the covered article.
In the drawings, showing-my invention" in the best form now known to me, 1 is a fastoner-body, by which term I mean, any article or thing to be covered, in whole or in part, with a covering compound; and 2 is a flange on both sides of which the covering compound is placed.
In the course of manufacturing fastening devices of this class, I havediscovered that in order to facilitate the manufacture and to turn out a more durable product, it is necessary to have the under side of flange 2 some distance above the supporting die (see D,Fig. 4) when the plastic cover 3. is pressed on by the facing-die (see .D, Fig. 4) because the pressure exerted by the facing die tends to force the under surface of flange 2 against the in order to secure the strongest and most ent during hold of the plastic or like covering COlIl pound on body 1, it is necessary to preserve the integrity of flange 2, that is, to keep the flange intact along its outer edge 5, and, at all points, above the face of the supporting .die; or in other words, the edge 5 of the flange projects beyond the feet, as at 5, so that the compound may fill in under the flange and between the feet. For this reason the feet are projections from the under side of the flange, within the perimeter of the flange, so that the compound'may fill in between the feet and underneath the whole edge 5 of the flange. I preferably slit the feet, as at 6, so that the covering compound within and without the flange may be united or b'onded'together by portions of the compoundin and through the slits, as at 7; but this is a minor feature of my invention, although the bonding is important in that it tends to insure the permanency of the covering.
What I claim is- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a fastener-body formed with a continuous flange which has supporting feet projecting from its under side within the perimeter of the flange, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a fastoner-body, formed with a flange which has supporting feet projecting from its under side within the perimeter of the flange, the edge of the flange projecting beyond the bases of the feet, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a fastener-body formed with a flange which has perforated supporting feet projecting from its underside, within the perimeter of the flange, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a fastener or fastener member, comprising a body formed with a flange having supporting feet projecting from its under side within its perimmeter, combined with a plastic covering within and without the flange and holding on the flange between the feet, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a fastener or fastener member, comprising a body formed with aflange and with supporting feet from the flange within the perimeter of the seamsfiange, the edge of the flange projecting beyond. the bases of the feet, combined with a plastic covering within and without the flange and holding on the flange between the feet, and on the portion of the flange which projects beyond the bases of the feet, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a fasteneror fastener member, comprising a body formed with a flange and perforated feet dependent from the flange within the perimeter thereof combined with a plastic cover within and Without the flange and through said perforations, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
