S. OBRYAN! PLOWSHARE IMMERSING CLAMP.
Patented Mar; 12, 1895.
ITNESSES INVENTOR PATENT rrrc STAFFORD OBRYAN, OF MADISON, WISCONSIN.
PLOWSHARE-IMMERSING CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,458, dated March 12, 1895.
Application filed January 5 1 894- To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, STAFFORD OBRYAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smiths Tongs or Clamps for Holding Plowshares, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, reference being had to the drawings accompanying the same and to the letters marked thereon.
This invention relates to smiths tongs or clamps, provided with surfaces or edges which are designed to fit the sides of a plowshare and hold the same during the act of immersion.
The said invention consists in the especial construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved clamp or tongs, holding a plowshare. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the same without the plowshare. Fig. 3 represents the various parts of the tongs, detached, without the plates and keeper. Fig. 4 represents a detail plan view of the pair of clamping plates. Fig. 5 represents an edge view of one of the said plates; and Fig. 6 represents a detail view of the keeper.
L designates the straight legs of the tongs which are pivoted together at the top by a pintle P, passing through pivot-holes 10 in their ears D H. The said pintle is screwthreaded and held in place by a nut outside of the said ears and is also extended considerably beyond the said nut.
G and O designate a pair of plates which are riveted to these legs at r occupying a po sition between the aforesaid pivot and the ends 00 at of the said legs which are grasped by the smiths hands, and locked at will by slipping over them the link-shaped keeper K.
.Studs s, fitted into the said legs near the handle ends a: 00 thereof constitute, with the extended pintle P, supports for the clamp when the latter is placed on a table or any horizontal surface with the plowshare in its Serial No. 495.880. (No model.)
grasp. The said plates fit against the said legs at their ends Q near the handles and for the greater part of their length, but their remoter ends V are equally and correspondingly bent outward therefrom so that their'inner edges B will conform to the usual shape of the sides of a plowshare. One side of such a share is shown in Fig. 1 occupying the position in which the said share is grasped and held by the said plates; and the other side will of course have acorresponding curvature of surface. The said plates considerably overlap the legs to which they are respectively attached, so that their edges B will be nearly or quite in contact when the said legs are parallel to each other as shown in Fig. 2. As shown in Figs. 2, 4, and 5, the said edges are beveled away on each side to sharpen them and obtain a tighter fit and more secure grip on the plowshare.
Heretofore in some instances tongs or clamps have been provided with scissors-like extensions beyond the pivoted point, or other plowshare grasping parts which are similarly located; but such a construction involves projections that are likely to get in the way by catching on all sorts of obstacles, or an unnecessary and awkward lengthening of the tool or a loss in leverage as well as in neatness and compactness.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A plow-share clamp for smiths use consisting of a pair of legs pivoted together at one end and provided with plates attached to them between said pivot and the handle ends of the said legs, the edges of the said plates projecting toward each other being equally curved outward near the end remote from the handles, in order that they may present inner edges adapted to fit on the sides of a plow-share substantially as set forth.
STAFFORD OBRYAN.
