I UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. THOMAS, OF HANCOCK, ISCONSIN.
PIPE-GRIPPING ATTACHMENT FOR WRENCHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,605, dated April 16, 1889.
Application filed December 14, 1388.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. THOMAS, of Hancock, in the county of Waushara and State of \Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Pipe-Gripping Attachment to a Monkey-Wrench; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to thelettersor figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention is of a simple device intended and adapted to be attached to an ordinary monkeywrench, whereby such wrench is made capable of successfully gripping and turning ordinary pipe, like gas-pipe.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my complete device. Fig. 2 is aview of a monkey-wrench with my device affixed thereto. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the monkey-wrench on line X X of Fig. 2, showing an elevation of my device as connected therewith.
The same letters refer to like parts in all the views.
The monkey-wrench shown in the draw ings, which is of a form best suited for the use of my device in connection therewith, consists of the handle A, shank B, head 0, having the forwardly-projecting jaw D, the traveling jaw E, the screw F, turning at one end in a part of the jaw E and bearing at its other end against the collar II, and provided with an integral milled-edge collar G, by means of which screw F the jawE is made to travel back and forth on the shank B toward and from the jaw D.
My improved device, which is adapted to be secured to the inner face of the jaw D, consists of a plate, I, having a tang, K, intended to pass downwardly alongside of the shank B and to bear against it, terminating in a screw-threaded end, on which is a thumbscrew, L. Another tang, M, is intended and adapted to extend downwardly alongside the shank B on the opposite side from the shank K, and to act as a guard with the tang K to hold the device in position 011 the shank B. I also preferably turn the top of the plate I Serial No. 293,606. (No model.)
over rearwardly, forming a kind of hook, 0, adapted to engage on the end of the jaw D to still further aid in holding the plate in position. I also preferably construct the tang K with a shoulder at S, so that the nut L is permitted to come up alongside the head 0, the wings M M being capable of being rotated under the head, as shown in the drawings 2 and 3. The face of the plate I is provided with two, three, or more sharp downwardlyprojecting teeth, P P P", intended and adapted to engage the surface of a pipe, R, a little above its greatest lateral diameter when the pipe rests 011 the shank B, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby, when the pipe is firmly clutched in the wrench, by moving the jaw E against it, holding it firmly in contact with the teeth of the plate I, the pipe may be turned by a movement of the handle A upwardly. The teeth P P P" are preferably so constructed that each outer or upper tooth, as shown in Fig. 2, is a little longer than the next lower onethat is, that it projects forwardly toward the pipe a little farther than the one immediately below itand also the second tooth is a little farther from the first tooth, P, than the first tooth, P, is from the shank B, and the third tooth, P", is a little farther from the second tooth, P, than the second tooth is from the first tooth, P, whereby these teeth are especially adapted for gripping pipes of different sizes, so that with an ordinary monkey-wrench this device is adapted to enable the wrench to grip a pipe from one-half inch up to two inches and a half in diameter.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a wrench having a shank, B, a fixed jaw, D, and traveling jaw E, with a removable plate, I, said plate being provided with a hook, O, downwardly-turned teeth P P P, a long screw-threadled tang, K, and a short tang, N, and a thumb-nut, L, turning on the screw-threaded tang K against shank B, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of a wrench having a shank, B, a fixed jaw, D, a head, 0, and a traveling jaw, E, With a removable plate, I, hav- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in ing a hook, O, a series of downwardly-propresence of two Witnesses.
jeeting teeth, P P P, a long screw-threaded tang, K, a short tang, N, and a shoulder, S, CHARLES H. THOMAS. and a thumb-nut, L, the inner tooth, P, being the shortest one and each outer tooth being Witnesses:
longer than the next inner tooth, all substan- 'W. H. CAMPFIELD,
tially as described. W. L. THOMAS.
