SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,117, dated March 5, 1895.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHEAL J. MORAN, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at St. John,in the county of St.John and Province of New Brunswick, Canada, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney Cowls or Ventilators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of devices, known as chimney cowls or ventilators, and it has for its object to increase or im prove the draft in chimneys, stovepipes, or ventilators, generally, Whatever may be the difculties to be overcome or regardless of the quarter the wind may be blowing from, and can be used to great advantage and convenience in any weather, and it is equally serviceable on steam and sailing vessels where much trouble is experienced from bad or contrary drafts, especially on sailing vessels.
To these ends my invention consists of the novel combination and construction of parts substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed and specially pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of my improved chimney cowl or ventilator. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view thereof.
In the embodiment of my invention, I provide a central, upright pipe-section or stack somewhat greater in diameter than that of an ordinary stovapipe section, and having at the required height and convenient points thereon, preferably, triangular loops or rings ot ct, to which are made fast ropes or wires (not shown) for bracing` or staying the same, as against being thrown or blown from its position.
The stack or pipe-section A has radiating therefrom, a short distance below the upper end, a series of branch pipe-sections or arms B of'less diameter, and arranged in a common horizontal plane. The pipe-section or stack A and the smaller pipe-sections or arms B have each, applied thereto opposite its exitend a cap l), preferably conical, with its apex presented outward. These caps are rigidly connected to said pipe-sections, but so as to stand some distance away from the exit-ends thereof, by metal-straps, or bars o c, preferably two for each cap, thus providing lateral exit-openings c to prevent the wind or counter-,drafts from entering said pipe-sections but to allow for the escape of the smoke. Fitted to slide upon said pipe-sections A and B, dro., are sleeves or slides C, and D, dac., respectively, to provide for closing whichever' o`f the lateral exit-openings c the counter currents or drafts may render it necessary, to regulate the draft of the stove or chimney, and thus prevent the smoking ofthe chimney or stove, while promoting the draft in any weather or during contrary or unfavorable winds. Hence, it is obvious that my invention isespecially serviceable in steam and sailing vessels, where great difficulty is experienced, from contrary winds or counter-currents, to maintain a proper draft and regulate the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure `by Letters Patent, is-
1. A chimney cowl or ventilator having its radial branch pipes or arms provided with lateral exit-openings, and caps at the outer ends of said eXit-openin gs and sliding sleeves to close the latter, substantially as set forth.
2. A chimney cowl or ventilatorI having a stack or upright pipe-section provided with a lateral exit opening adapted to be closed by a slide, and with a fixed cap at the outer end of said exit-opening and radial branch pipes or arms having lateral exit-openings adapted to be closed by sliding sleeves, and each branch pipe or arm having a iixed cap at the outer end of its exit-opening substantially as set forth.
3. A chimney cowl or ventilator having caps fixed in alignment with the chambers of its branch-pipes and distantly from the exit or outlet openings thereof, upon metal-straps, in turn, fixed to said branch-pipes, and sleeves adapted to slide upon said metal straps or connections between said caps and branchpipes, substantially as set forth.
