Description

SALADEE & SIMPSON;
Plow-Point.
No. 53,491.l Patented Mar. 27, 1866.
MPEriRS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C UNirnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CYRUS W. SALADEE AND THOMASv SIMPSON, OF NEWARK, OHIO.
IIVIPROVEM ENT IN PLOW-POINTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,491 dated March 27, 1866.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, OYRUS W. SALADEE and THOMAS SIMPSON, of Newark, county of Licking, State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing Plow- Points; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature ot' our invention consists in the peculiar mode, hereinafter described, of connectin g plow-points to plowshares.
lu the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the point of a plowshare with the adjustable point A attached ready for use. Fig. 2 is a view of the share with the point A removed, showing the slot H and the indentation F, with which the point A is received. Fig. 3 is a view ofthe point A detached from the share.
We form the point A, substantially as shown by Fig. 3, of cast-iron, with flanges or beveled lips E in front, and the projecting stud C at or near the back end. The narrow part ofthe point A', Fig. 3, we embed in the front end of the share B, Fig. 2, as shown by the indentation F, and as seen by Fig. l. In the rear end of this indentation F we pierce through the share B the slot H, which receives the stud O on the back end of the plow-point A, Fig.3. This stud C', Fig. 3, extends outpast the end of the point A A to formthe shoulder C. Thus, when the point is placed into the indentation F, as seen by Fig. l, the stud C C prevents the rear end ofthe points A A from rising up out of the indentation, and the beveled lips E will firmly hold the extreme front end of the point A from rising up.
The point is firmly held to its place in the share B by the wedge D, (shown in Fig. 3,) which is driven into the slot H from the under side of the share, immediately in front ot' the stud C. (See Fig. 3.)
The great simplicity of this arrangement enables us to produce our points ready for the plow for the mere cost 0i' the cast-iron, and being so readily attached and detached, the farmer can in a few minutes exchange a new point for the worn-out one without taking oft' the share, or even unhitching his horses from the plow.
In the ordinary cast-iron plows, when the point is worn out the whole share must be removed and thrown away, and in the wroughtiron plows the share must bc removed and carried to the village blacksmith to be sharpened.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Embedding the pointA in the top surface of the share B, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as shown and described.
2. The stud O', Fig. 3, or its equivalent, in combination with the point A A', indentation F., and slot H, as and for the purpose substantiall y as set forth.
3. rIhe beveled lips E ofthe pointA, Fig. 3, in combination with the corresponding lips E, Fig. 2, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
4. The short wedge D, Fig. 3, in combination with the stud C and slot H, in the inanner and for the purpose substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the above We hereunto set our names.
