WILLIAM F. PARKER, OB TROY, ALABAMA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, JOHN R. GOLDTHWAITE, AND WILLIAM H. FRYER, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 114,334, dated May 2, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT lN PLOWS.
The Schedule referred to in these-Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W ILLIAM F. PARKER, of Troy, in the county of Pike and State of Alabama, have invented a new and improved Plow; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation.
Figure 2 is a top view.
This invention relates to an improved arrangement of certain parts or devices composing a cultivator of the class whose shares are vertically adjustable, while their pitch or inclination to the planes of the surface of the soil may be varied by a change in the position of the standard.
The invention particularly consists in the arrangement of parts as hereinafter described, and as specifically stated in the claim.
Referring to the drawinga is a plow-beam.
b, an inclined standard secured to the rear end of the beam.
0, a metal stock forked at its upper extremity so as to embrace the beam a between its prongs d.
a is a metal bar jointed at one end to the bottom of the stock 0 and at the other end to the bottom of the I standard 1).
f is the plowshare, the same being secured to the front side of the stock 0 by means of a bolt, i, fastened at its head to the share, and extending from the latter into and through a slot made lengthwise of the stock 0, said bolt being threaded outside and combined with a nut, m, byscrewing which against the rear side of the stock 0 the share f is clamped against the latter.
By means of the slot the share may be moved up or down on the stock; but I do not allege any novelty in the slotted stock by itself. My stock is peculiar in this, that it is notched on its front side, as shown at n.
The top of the share f should always be in-coutact with one or the other of the shoulders n, by which arrangement the share is effectually prevented from being forced upward along the stock.
The prongs d of the stock 0 are connected by a bolt, g, which may be screwed in or out as regards the prongs.
Into the top of the beam a is let a plate, 71-, the upper side of which is transversely fluted in grooves k, which are of proper size to receive the bolt g.
By loosening the bolt in the prongs it may be transferred from one of the grooves It to any one of the others, and there secured by screwing the bolt in the back. This change of the bolt from one groove in to another alters the pitch of the share. The connecting of the stock and bar 0 by a joint enables this change to be accomplished without difficulty.
The lower end of the standard I) is protected from abrasion by a metal hood, 1.
Any kind of plowshare may be used.
\Vithont claiming as new any of the devices, per se,
whereof mycnltiva'tor is composed, I believe to be novel and desire to protect by Letters Patent- The arrangement of the bar 0, forked stock 0 jointed thereto and carrying the share or shovel f, and the grooved plate It and bolt g, with the rigid standard I) and beam (1, as herein shown and described, for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM F. PARKER.
