BELT-GUIDE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,667, dated February 26, 1895.
Application filed April 28, 1894.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MITCHELL G. RING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sherman, in the county of Lincoln and State of 'Washington, have invented a new and useful Belt-Guide,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to belt-guides and the objects in view are to produce a belt-guide designed to be applied to the boiler of an engine employed for operating a thrashing-machine and to support in position with relation to the drive-wheel thereof the aforesaid belt, preventing the same from climbing or being blown off by the wind; and to so construct the guide as to render it capable of being cheaply manufactured and sold and readily adjusted to accommodate different widths of belts.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the guide. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional-view through the horizontal guide-roller. Fig. 3 is a transverse horizontal sectional-view through the vertical rolls. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional-view through the extension-arm.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The device is adapted to be applied to the side of a boiler, and therefore comprises as a means of attachment thereto a securing-plate 1, provided upon its inner face with transverse ribs 2 and near its upper and lower ends with bolt-holes 3. The base 1 is curved to conform to the exterior surface of the boiler, and has formed upon its outer side and extending horizontally therefrom an arm 4. This arm is provided with a perforation 5, upwardly through which extends an adj ust- Upon the upper side of the arm a pair of parallel ways or ribs 7 are formed, the perforation 5 being located therebetween. An L-shaped arm 8 has its horizontal portion longitudinally slotted as at 9 and its under side provided with longitudinal grooves to fit the ways 7. at any point by means of the before-mentioned binding-bolt 6, which, as seen, passes through the slot 9 of the arm 8.
The arm 8 at its outer end is perforated at 10 to receive a binding-bolt 11, and the latter passes through a longitudinal slot 12 formed in a vertical standard 13. This standard 13 has its outer side provided with a shallow recess 14in which the aforesaid slot 12 is formed,
andin this recess fits and rides the outer end of the L-shaped arm 8. Extendingfrom the lower end of this standard 13 and at a. right angle thereto is an inwardly disposed arm 14", the same having its front side provided with a pair of longitudinal parallel ribs 16 which receives a companion arm 17 the latter being slotted longitudinally at 18 to receive a binding-bolt 19, which is passed through a perforation formed in' the arm 14;" between the ribs 16. From the outer end of the arm 17 rises a standard 20 similar to the standard 13 and of a corresponding length.
Bolted to the front faces of the standards I3 and 20 at the upper and lower ends thereof are lL-shaped bearing-blocks 21, the same having perforations 22 formed in their two branches, the transverse perforations receiving bolts 23, by which means they are secured to the aforesaid standards. The remaining perforations, or those in the horizontal portions, form bearings for the trunnions 24 of a pair of vertical rollers 25. These blocks are reversible, that is may be placed at either side of the frame. 7
Applied to the inner face of the standard 13 is a sliding bar 26, the same having its front face recessed to receive the standard and is longitudinally slotted as at 27. A binding-bolt 28 passes through the slot 27 and through the standard 13, whereby the aforesaid baris adjustable up and down. Secured to the bar 26 and extending at a right angle thereto in rear of the bar 20 is an arm 29, the same having at its inner and outer ends depending hangers 30 in which bearing-openings are formed. These bearing openings receive the axial-bearings of aloose horizon tal roller 32. v
This completes the construction of the device, and its operation is as follows: The plate 1 is secured to the boiler by the bolts and the frame extends outward therefromin a horizontal manner in advance of the drivewheel. The standard 20 may be swung down out of the way for the admission of the lower portion of the belt by loosening the bolt 19, and the rollers 25 are adjusted to or away from each other through the medium.

The bar 26 is also recessed and lowered to accommodate the position assumed by the belt, so that as will be obvious the belt passes under the roller 32 and between the rollers 25, whereby the belt cannot become displaced by the wind or climb the rollers 25, as would be the case without the roller 32.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be seen that I have provided a very simple device designed to be applied to any ordinary boiler or other fixed support and adapted to support and guide in an efficient, positive manner the lower portion of a belt leading from a drive-pulley to the thrashing machine.
Of course my belt-guide is adapted for other purposes, and I do not limit its use to that hereindescribed. I would also have it understood that I do not limit my invention to the precise details of construction herein shown and described, but hold that I may vary the same to any degree and extent within the knowledge of the skilled mechanic.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a belt-guide, the combination with an arm adapted to be secured to a boiler or other fixed support, and a slotted extensible-arm arranged on said arm, and means for adjusting the same thereon, of a rectangular frame secured to the outer end-of the extensible-arm and having opposite vertical guide-rollers and a horizontal roller an intermediate adjustable connection between the vertical rollers, and separate adjusting means for said horizontal roller, substantially as specified.
2. In a belt-guide, the combination with an arm adapted to be secured to the boiler orother fixed support, and a slotted extensible-a rm arranged on said arm, and means for adjusting the same thereon, of a rectangular frame secured to the outer end of the extensible-arm and having opposite vertical guide-rollers and a horizontal roller, means for raising and lowerin g the horizontal roller, and for separating and contracting the vertical rollers, substantially as specified.
3. In a belt-guide, the combinationwith a supporting-arm, and means for attaching it to a support, of opposite standards, one of which issecured to said arm, adjustable connections between the standards, and vertical rollers carried by said standards, substantially as specified.
4. In a belt-guide, the combination with a supporting-arm, and means for attaching it to a support, of opposite standards, one of which is secured to said arm, adjustable connections between the standards, vertical rollers carried in said standards, ahorizon-tal arm having depending bearinghangers, and a horizontal roller arran gedtherein, substantially as specified.
5. In a belt-guide, the combination with a supporting-arm having a vertical portion at .its outer end, opposite vertical standards, the
inner one of which is slotted and recessed to receive said vertical portion, a bolt passing 7 through the vertical portion and through the slot, a pair of inwardly disposed arms at the lower endsof the standards, one of said arms having guide-ribs and the other recessed to receive the same and slotted, a bolt passing through the ribbed arm and said slot in the remaining arm and provided with a nut, of upper and lower L-shaped' bearing blocks secured to the upper and lower ends of said standards and provided with bearings, rollers having axial-trunnions arranged in the bearings, a recessed bar arranged on the rear side of the inner standard and slotted, a bolt passing through the slot'and said inner standard, a horizontal arm extending from the bar across the frame and having depending hangers provided with bearings, and a loose guide-roller arranged in the bearings, substantially as specified.
