UNTTE JOSEPH SOROKIN, 0F DES MOINES, IOWA.
ATTACHMENT FOR ADJUSTING GUIDE-CORDS FOR MANGLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 29, 1916.
Application filed May 25, 1914. Serial No. 840,722.
To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SoRoKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Des Moines, county of Folk, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Adjusting Guide- Cords for Mangles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mangles in which guide cords are used to direct the course of the clothes through the pressing rolls, and it has for its object to produce means, operating independently of each cord and yet combined as an attachment adapted to be secured to any mangle, to continually keep a tight tension on the cords, said means operating automatically, thus avoiding the delay and annoyance incident to the adjusting of the tension of one or more of the cords.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination, of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I shows a front elevation view of the upper part of a mangle my attachment being secured thereto; and Fig. II shows a sectional view, on an enlarged detail, of a part of my device.
Referring to the accompanying drawings the reference numerals 10 are used to indicate the rollers of a mangle and 11 the guide cords.
My attachment consists of a supporting member 12, provided with a plurality of non-circular vertical openings therethrough, an opening occurring in the vertical line of each guide cord, said member being secured longitudinally between the sides of the mangle. In each of said openings is movably secured a shaft 18, provided with a shoulder 14, near its upper extremity, a coil spring 15 being mounted on said shaft its ends engaging the supporting member 12 and the shoulder 14, as shown. The shaft extends through the supporting member and is provided with a lug, or cotter pin, 16, or the like, to limit the upward movement of the shaft in its opening. On the upper extremity of the shaft is rotatably secured a grooved wheel 17, the bearing for the shaft being horizontal, as shown.
The guide cords pass over their respective grooved wheels and, when adjusted, the tension of the cord is such as to compress the spring 15. As the cord stretches, as obviously the work will cause it to do, the spring 15 forces the grooved wheel upward, thus keeping a uniform tension on the cord.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A cord adjuster for mangles comprising a supporting member provided with a plurality of non-circular openings extending therethrough; a shaft in each opening the upper extremity of said shaft being turned to form a bearing for a. grooved wheel rotatably mounted thereon; a coil spring on said shaft, and means to retain said shaft, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a cord adjuster for mangles, a support having an opening therein, a bar slidable vertically in said opening, said bar having its upper end portion extending laterally to form a shoulder and thence extending vertically and again laterally to form a journal, a wheel on the journal, and a coil spring surrounding the bar and engaged at its ends with said shoulder and with said support.
3. In a cord adjuster for mangles, a hollow support having an opening therein and extending through opposite sides of the support to provide bearings at said sides which bearings are separated by the space interiorly of the support, a shouldered bar slidable in the opening and engaged with each of said bearings, cord engaging means on the bar, and a spring surrounding the bar and engaged with the shoulder of the bar and with the support.
JOSEPH SOROKIN.
