UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. CHADEAYNE, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
TOBOGGAN.
$PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,515, dated August 16, 1887.
Application filed J unc 20. 1887.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen H. CHADEAYNE, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toboggans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in toboggans which are mounted upon rollers, and designed more particularly for coasting indoors or during the summer months. In to boggans of this construction it. is difficult to prevent the toboggan from running against the sides of the incline or coasting track, whereby the progress of the toboggan is retarded or hindered and the occupant is liable to become injured.
The object of my invention is to provide the toboggan with guide-rollers which run in contact with the sides of the coasting-track, and whereby the toboggan is guided in its movements and held at a distance from the sides of the coasting-track.
The invention consists of the improvement which will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved toboggan. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary cross-section thereof on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation of the toboggan. Fig. 4 is a front View thereof, with the inclined coasting-track shown in cross-section.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the body of thetobogga11,whicl1 is curved upwardly at its front end, in the usual manner, and provided on its under side with cross-pieces a.
B represents the rollers upon which the to-- boggan runs, and which are journaledin brackets O, secured to the cross-piece a by screws The brackets O are Serial No. 241.819. (No model.)
each provided with two vertical lugs or ears, 0, between which the roller B is pivoted by a horizontal pin, d, passing through openings formed in said lugs.
E represents the guiderollers, which project laterally beyond the edges of the toboggan, and whereby the toboggan is guided in its movement down the incline. The guiderollers E bear with their outer faces against the sides f of the incline and prevent the edges of the toboggan from striking the same, thereby facilitating the movement of the toboggan and avoiding injury to the person seated on the same. Each bracket 0 is provided with two horizontal ears or lugs, 9, between which the rollers E are journaled, the journal-pins h of said rollers passing through openings formed in the outer ends of the lugs g.
I represents cushions, of rubber or other suitable material, interposed between the brackets O and the under side of the crosspieces a, and whereby the noise caused by the rollers B and E is deadened.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with a toboggan provided on. its under side with brackets O, of supportingrollers B, journaled in said brackets, and guide-rollers E, journaled in the brackets G at right angles to the supporting-rollers, and projecting laterally from opposite sides of the toboggan, substantially as set forth.
2. In a toboggan, the brackets 0, provided with vertical lugs a, between which the rollers B are journaled, and with horizontal lugs 9, between which the guide-rollers E are journaled, substantially as set forth.
Witness my hand this 4th day of June, 1887.
GEORGE H. GHADEAYN E.
