Be it known that I, ALOIS KALoUs, citizen of the United States, residing at Lewlston,
in the county of Nez Perce and State of.
Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boat Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a device which can be attached to the front or bow of a boat for preventing or greatly reducing the friction of water against the same while the boat is in motion.
Another object of this invention is the production of simple means for attaching the friction-eliminating device to the boat.
Still another object of this invention is the production of a simple bow piece, which can be stamped out of sheet metal, and easily and quickly attached to the bow of a boat or vessel.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a boat showing the friction eliminating device secured thereto. Fig.2 is a bottom plan'view of the bow of the boat, showing the device connected thereto. Fig. 3 is a ragmentary view of the roller-supporting means or frames showing one of the rollers in section. Fig. 4 is a modification of the roller and supporting frame, where one series of rollers is employed above the other, and where the rollers are mounted upon roller bearings. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the bow piece, before the same has been applied to the boat.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the hull of the boat or vessel to which is attached roller-supporting frames 2 and 3. The frames 2 and 3 are formed so as to fit snugly against the bow of the vessel, and said frames 2 and 3 are provided upon their inner edges with a plurality of laterally extending integral lugs 4:. The lugs 4 are preferably, after being stamped out so as to form the frames 2 and 3, bent at right-angles to the frame so as to allow the same to be firmly secured to the sides of the vessel, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. As shown in Fig. 2, the frames extend around the bow or front of the vessel and continue for some distance upon the sides of Specification of Letters Patent.

the same. Of course, if it be so desired, the friction or eliminating device could extend the entire length of the vessel.
Rollers 5 are interposed between the frames 2 and 3, and are journaled upon the shafts 6, which shafts have their respective ends journaled in the frames 2 and 3. The rollers 5 are preferably spaced apart, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, and are so arranged and fitted on the bow of the boat as to be at the same angle as the inner edge 7 of the bow piece 8, hereinafter clescribed. Of course, if it be so desired, any number of rows of rollers could be used as shown in Fig. 4; only one row being shown in the present instance to simplify matters, and bring out more clearly the whole structure of the supporting frames, and features of the invention, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In Fig. 4 I have shown an embodiment of my invention where the rollers 5 are journaled upon the roller bearings 9. The rollers 5 are carried by shafts 6 which like the shaft 6, previously described, have their respective ends journaled upon the supporting frames 2 and 3. As shown in Fig. 4, a plurality of rows could be used by merely employing an additional frame. Journal members 10 are carried by the frames 2 and 3, as shown in Fig. 4c, and support'the roller or ball bearings 9; the journal members 10 engaging the respective ends of the rollers 5 as clearly shown in Fig. 4.. The bow piece 8 comprises a body portion, which terminates at its end in laterally extending feet or arms 11. The bow-piece, like the supporting frames, can be easily stamped out of sheet metal, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, and then be shaped so as to fit the bow of the boat or vessel, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The bow-piece 8 straddles the frames 2 and 3 and has the upper and lower arms 11 secured to the boat above and below the frames 2 and 3. The feet 11 of the bow-piece 8 are secured to the boat by means of rivets or any other suitable fastening means, 12.
From the foregoing description, it will be readily seen that when the vessel travels in a forward direction, the water will be cut by the bow-piece 8, and will be thrown out or into engagement with the rollers 5, and in this manner will not engage the bow of the boat and retard the forward movement as would be the case if it were not prowinc vided with the friction-reducing device, as hereinbefore described. If it be so desired, the rollers may be corrugated or roughened longitudinally thereof, so as to be more readily rotated When engaged by the Water.
Vhat I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination With a hull of a vessel, of a plurality of roller-supporting frames, carried thereby, shafts interposed between said supporting frames, journal boxes carried by said shafts, rollers positioned upon the said shafts and engaging said journal boxes, roller bearings carried by said journal boxes, and engaging the respective ends of said rollers for decreasing the friction of the same, when said rollers are revolved.
In a device of the class described the combination with a hull of a boat, of a plurality of roller supporting frames secured to the out-side of said hull, said frames placed one above the other upon said hull and being substantially V-shaped so as to lit snugly around the bow of said hull, a lip portion formed near each end of each frame and bent at an angle thereto, lip portions formed intermediate the ends of said frame and bent at an angle thereto, means passing through said lip-portions and engaging said hull for holding the frames thereon, and rollers interposed between said frames and supported thereby.
