To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Doxxiin 13. UN 1mm. and HARRY J. FAYOPJTE, citizens of the United States, residing at Tippecanoe City, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Bearings for Churns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to bearing for churns.
The object of the invention is to provide a. construction which will eliminate wab bling and give a steady movement to the rotating parts of a churn or the like.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section on the line 11 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a plan view with the upper bracket in section; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of the invention here shown it is contemplated to apply the same to the screw-threaded covers of jars, such as the well known Mason ar. Such a air is indicated at 1 in the drawings and is provided with threads 2 with which meshes a screw-threaded cover or supporting member 3. To the upper side of this Cover is attached a transversely extending reinfore ing strip 4 and to this strip is connected a bracket 5 which comprises a strip of metal. This bracket is provided with downwardly extending vertical portions 6 and horizontally extendingportions 7 attached to the strip at. The bottom of the cover has attached. thereto a second strip 8 and to this strip is attached an elongated downwardly extending bracket 9 provided with upper horizontally extending portions 10 attached to the strip 8. The brackets and strips are fastened to the cover by means of suitable rivets 11. The lower portion of the bracket 9 is provided with an opening 12, constituting a bearing. An opening 18 is also provided through the transverse strips and cover and through the horizontal portion of the bracket 5, as indicated at 14c. The three openings or bearings are in alinement and within these openings is journaled a rotatable shaft 15. To the upper end of this shaft is fixed a gear 16 located between the horizontal portion of the bracket 5 and the cover. This gear also serves to hold the shaft 15 within its bearings in a pendant position. To rotate the shaft we have pro- Specification of Letters Patent.

' vided areciprocatory rack 17 having teeth 111 mesh with the gear on one side thereof and suitably guided at the other side thereof by a vertical portion (3 of the bracket 5, whereby a steady reciprocatory movement back and forth is obtained without lateral play. By the arrangement above described it will be seen that we have provided a rotatable shaft which is securely and strongly ournaled upon the cover, the journals being located in. spaced apart relation. The manner of attaching the various brackets and supports to the cover is such that a very strong and durable construction is obtained. The cover being screw-tlneaded the parts will rotate without dislocation thereof.
The lower portion of the shaft 15 is provided with a suitable beater device and for this purpose I have provided a pair of integral strips of metal 18 and 19. Each strip is attached intermediate its ends immediately below the bearing 12, as indicated at 20. The portions of the strip at each side of the point of attachment 20 are bent at right angles to each other, whereby radially extending vertical portions are obtained, these portions being indicated at 21. Each of the strips is bent downwardly, as indicated at 22, to form vertically extending strips 23. It will be noticed in this connection that the portions 21 and 23 are at right angles to the direction of rotation. Adjacent the lower end of the shaft the end portions of the strips are again bent, as indicated at 24, directed radially and horizontally, as indicated at 25, and attached to the bottom of the rotatable shaft, as indicated at 26, whereby a very strong and durable beater is obtained and which is also very efficient in its churning operation.
While we have shown and described one embodiment of our invention it will be understood that this has been chosen for the purposes of illustration only, and that we do not \desire to be limited to the details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a supporting member, of a bracket comprising an upper horizontal portion, lower horizontal portions connected to the upper side of said member, and vertical portions connecting said horizontal portions, a bearing attached to the lower side of said member and spaced therebelow, bearings in said member and bracket, a'rotatable shaft journaled in said. bearings, and means located within said bracket for rotating said shaft.
2. The combination, with a supporting member, of reinforcing strips attached to the upper and lower sides of said member, U-shaped brackets attached to said strips and extending upwardly and downwardly therefrom, bearings comprising openings through the upper portion of one bracket, a lower portion of the other bracket and through said strips and member, a shaft journaled in said bearings, and means located within said upper bracket for rotating said shaft.

The combination, with a supporting member, of abracket attached to the upper side of said member, a downwardly extending bracket attached to the lower side of said member, the upper portion of said first-mentioned bracket being provided with a bearing opening and the lower portion of the last-mentioned bracket being also provided with a bearing opening, said openings being at unequal distances from said mem her, a bearing opening extending through said member in alinement with said firstmentioned openings, a shaft rotatably journaled within said bearing openings, and means for rotating said shaft.
4:. In a device of the character described a supporting member having a bearing, a pendant shaft having a churning device at its lower end and journaled in said bearing,
a bracket attached to the top of said supporting member and having a bearing for the upper end of said shaft, an elongated bracket attached to the bottom of said supporting member, and having a bearing for said shaft at its lower end close to said churning device and means for rotating said shaft.
5. In. a device of the character described, a supporting member provided with an opening, brackets provided with openings and attached to the top and bottom of said member, a shaft rotatably mounted in said openings, and a device fixed to said shaft between said member and top bracket for performing the dual. function of supporting said shaft in said openings in a pendant position and for rotating the same.
6. In a device of the character described, a supporting member provided with an opening, a shaft rotatablv mounted and supported in said opening in a pendant position, a bracket attached to the top of said member and provided with an opening through which the upper end of the shaft projects, a bracket attached to the bottom of said member and provided with an opening at a greater distance from the member than the opening in said first-mentioned bracket and through which the lower portion of the shaft projects, a gear fixed to said shaft and located between the member and first-mentioned bracket, and a rack guided by said first-mentioned bracket and meshing with said gear.
