2 ATTORNEYS UNITED. STATES JOHN JAMES cum), OF
PATENT OFFICE.
ROCKFIELD, KENTUCKY.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,918, dated April 29, 1884.
' Application filed May 12, 1883. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN J. GURD, a citizenof the United States, residing at Rockfield, in the county of Warren and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurns; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a vertical sectional View, and Fig. 2 is a front view, illustrating this invention.
This invention has relation to hand-power machines for operating churn-dashers which move reciprocally in vertical lines; and it con sists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a strong frame, having bearings B for the journals of the large pulley-wheel G, which is of sufficient size to act as a fly.
D represents a bracket-arm, which is secured to the end of the frame. It is formed with the parallel arms E, in which are made the bearings for the shaft of the small pulley F, which is connected to the large pulley by the operating-cord g. The shaft h of the small pulley is extended on each side to receive the crank wheels K, which are provided with wrisfipins L, to which are connected, respectively, the downwardly-extending arms N, the lower ends of which are provided with the bent wire pivot-arms m. The upper portions of the arms E of the bracket are extended outward horizontally, as indicated at P, and are connected by a transverse bar, S, which is designed to be in a projected position, so that the churn can be centered below it. In the bar S are the perforations or bearings t for the dash-rodsR, the upper ends of which reciprocate in said bearings. Below the dashmods are provided with transverse perforations o,which are engaged by the pivot ends of the arms N. Thedash-rods pass through parallel bearings z in the churn-cover I. v
This construction is designed to provide a hearings in the transverse bar S and in the cover I keep the dash-rods true, and the inwardly-bent pivot-wires m work freely in connection with said rods. are capable of yielding somewhat, they will operate with ease in the bearings of the dashrods when the machine is run with rapidity.
I am aware that it is not new to connect pitmen to crank-arms and bend their lower ends so that they can be attached to dasherrods, and also that churns have heretofore been provided with brackets for supporting their operating mechanism, and therefore do not claim such, broadly; but,
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The churn-motor herein described; consisting of the frame A, having bearings B for the journals of the large pulley O, the bracket D, composed of arms E E, which are secured, as shown, to the frame A, and support the shaft h, carrying the small pulley F, the said arms being extended outward horizontally, as indicated at P, and connected by the transverse bar S, which is providedwith perforations t, for guiding the dasher rods R, the crankwheels K, secured to the lateral extensions of the said shaft h, the arms N, connected near their upper endseccentrically to the crankwheels, and at their lower ends to the dasherrods by means of the bent wire pivot-arms m,
substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof Iaflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
