FRANK G. HIGH, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
CLOSET-SEAT AN D -FOOT-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming 5m of Letters Patent No. 532,959, dated January 22, 1 895.
\ Applicati n fi January 20, 1894- Serial No. 497,541- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK G. HIGH, acitizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Closet- Seats and Foot-Rests; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to seats for closets, and to a foot-rest connected therewith; and my invention consists of the constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described aud claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more complete explanation of my invention, the figure is a perspective view of my device looking from below.
A is a frame-work made of light iron, wood or other suitable material and having legs or other supports B B.
The main seat 0 is hinged in the usual manner so that it may be lifted up to expose the basin beneath when desired. The smaller seat D is so arranged with relation to the larger one that it may be closed to form an opening essentially coincident therewith and of smaller size for the use of children, and simultaneously with the movements of this smaller seat, a foot-rest E is exposed for use or closed up outof the way.
The foot-rest is hinged to the front legs or supports of the device so that it may be folded up out of the way when the larger seat is in use, or let down I into a horizontal position when the smaller seat is in use.
The connection between the foot-rest and the seat D consists of rods F, one end of which connects with crank arms or projections G extending outward from the center line or fulcrum about which the foot-rest turns. The opposite ends of these rods connect with one of the arms of the bell-crank levers attached to the seat D. The arm H is the shorter, and
H the longer arm of the bell crank levers which are fulcrumed to the lower partof the main seat. The smaller seat D is made in two halves which are adapted to slide in guides transversely beneath the main seat, so that when the two halves are closed together, they meet on a central line, and when opened, they slide back beneath the main seat. The long arms H of the bell crank levers are connected centrally'with these two halves, and when the foot-rest is turned up it acts through the connecting rods and the levers to open the smaller seat, and when turned down it closes it.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a closet, a main perforated seat, a supplemental slidable seat having an opening adapted to coincide with that of the main seat when closed, a foot-rest hinged in front of the seat frame above the foot support used with the main seat, lever arms projectingfroni the foot-rest and from the supplemental seat, and a connecting rod or rods, whereby the supplemental seat and foot-rest are simultaneously thrown into or out of use.
2. In a closet, the combination, of a main perforated seat, a supplemental seat formed of separable sections having an opening formed between them when closed, a pivoted footrest, and bell-crank levers having one end connected with the sections of the supplemental seat and the opposite end connected with the foot rest whereby the supplemental seat and foot rest are simultaneously th rowu into and out of use.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand. FRANK G. HIGH.
