Be it known that I, JOHN KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing-at Derby, in-

the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Suspender-Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide a novel, simple, efficient, and economical buckle which presents a desirable, highly finished, and ornamental appearance, and is particularly designed for quickly. castingoff or disconnecting a suspender end,

The invention consists in other features of construction and combination orarrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed,

when the suspender end has been cast ofi or disconnected from the buckle. In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein-- The numeral 1 indicates the base-plate of a buckle, which, in the present instance, is stamped or cut from sheet metal, andisformed at its upper end with a pair of separated eyes or bearings 2, and at its lower end with a contracted pendent shank 3, having a pair of separated eyes or bearings 4:. The eyes 2 at the upper end of the base-plate serve to receive and retain the lower bar of a wire or other suitable loop 5 which is applied to or connected with the suspender-web. The eyes 4, at the lower end of the shank 3, constitute bearings for a pin or pintle 6, on which is pivotally mounted the lower end of a cast-off hook 7. The end portion of the hook which is mounted on the pivot 6 is folded to make a double thickness of metal, as at 8, thereby forming a bracing heel portion which materially increases the strength and durability of the hook portion, and serves to carry or force the suspender end outward to cast the same off from the buckle when the hook swings downward.

The upper or outer extremity of the hook 7 is formed, or otherwise provided,with a laterally projecting lug 9, adapted to enter an orifice 10, formed intermediate the extremities of a hook-retaining and covering or concealing leaf 12. This leaf is pivotally mounted, atits upper end, on that portion or memberof the loop 5 which lies in the eyes or bearings 2. The lower end portion of the loop is arched or curved to form a cap plate, which can be highly ornamented in any desired manner, so that when the leaf 12 is in its normal position, Fig. 1,the lug 9 enters the orifice l0, and the arched ornamental cap,

The free or lower extremity of the leaf is adapted to be acted upon by the thumb or fingernail, so that it can be swung outward to disengage the orifice 10 from the lug 9, whereupon the hook will swing downward by strain on the suspender end, and such suspender end is forced outward and downward by the heel portion 8, whereby the suspender end is cast 01f or disconnected from the buckle. When the suspender end is to be connected with the buckle, it is placed in the hook, the latter is swung up to its proper position, and the leaf is swung down over the hook, so that the lug 9 enters the orifice 10, and thus interlocks the hook and leaf, sothat their accidental disengagement is effectually prevented, I,

The improved buckle-provides a very desirable device for connecting a suspender end with a suspender web, and enables the suspender end to be conveniently cast off or disconnected whenever occasion demands. v

The hook-retaining and covering or concealing leaf 12 is a very desirable feature, infthat it covers and conceals the hook, and at plate, a loop mounted on the upper end of the base-plate for connecting the latter with a base-plate, a hook pivoted at its lower end to the base-plate and provided at its upper end with a laterally projecting lug, and a hookretaining and covering-leaf pivoted to apart of the said loop, having an orificeintermediate its extremities with which the lug of the hook engages and provided at its lower end with an arched cap to lie over the hook, substantially as described.

A Suspender-buckle, consisting of a flattened base-plate having an eyed portion at its upper end, a loop mounted in said eyed portion, a hook pivoted at its lower end to the base-plate and provided at its upper end with a laterally projecting lug and at its lower end with a heel portion for forcing the suspenderend outward when the hook is swung downward, and a hook-retaining leaf pivoted to a part of the said loop, having an orifice intermediate its extremities, and an arched lower cap portion which'lies over and conceals the hook, substantially as described.
