No. 532,376. Patented Jan. 8, 1895.

WASTE-PIPE CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of :Letters Patent No. 532,376, dated January 8,1895.
Application filed August 11,1894. Serial No. 520,091. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. HOYT, a citizen of the United States ot' America, residing at Sharon, in the county ofMercer and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Waste-Pipe Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide means for cleaning and removing obstructions in waste pipes leading from sinks.
My device as will be described hereinafter comprises a plate adapted to be removably attached to the strainer secured in the sink, and is provided with a nozzle screwed therein. A hose is attached to the upper end of this nozzle and to a water cock, and the water is thereby forced in a small stream through the waste pipe. The nozzle is directly over thecentral perforation in the strainer, and all the other perforations in said strainer are closed by a gasket interposed between the plate and strainer.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l, is a side elevation of the device applied to the strainer and sink, part of the sink being shown. Fig. 2, is a central vertical section.
A section of a sink of ordinary constructionl is shown at l to which is secured the strainer 2 covering the mouth of the waste pipe 3. To this strainer .the cleaner is attached. It consists of the plate 4 having its under face made to conform to the shape. of the strainer, and in the center o f this plate is screwed the nozzle 5. The plate is attached to the strainer by means of the clips 6 having one of their ends the plate 2 and the strainer is a gasket S preferably of rubber. This gasket effectually covers all the openings in the strainer except those directly beneath the discharge opening in the nozzle 5 and thus all the water is forced through these central perforations.
To clean a sink this device is attached to the strainer and a hose secured to the nozzle and to a water cock. The Water is forced through the nozzle and the perforations beneath said nozzle. The stream of Water is so contracted by passing through Athese small openings that a great pressure is given thereto, sufficient to effectually cleanse the drain pipe or discharge any obstructions therein.
I claim- 1. In a device for cleansing waste pipes,in combination with the strainer covering the mouth of said pipe, the plate formed to t the contour of the face thereof, the nozzle screwed in the center of said plate, the bosses on each side of said nozzle, having openings therein, the clips passing through said openings and having laterally bent ends adapted to bear on the under side of the strainer and the nuts adapted to be screwed on the upperA end of said clips for clamping the said strainer and plate together, su bstantiallyas described.
2. In a device for cleansing waste pipes, in combination with the strainer covering the mouth of said waste pipe, the plate, the nozzle carried thereby, the clips and the thumb nut, connecting said plate and strainer, and an interposed rubber gasket between the plate and strainer surrounding the opening in said nozzle to close the perforations in said strainer surrounding said opening, said nozzle adapted to have a hose connected thereto and to the water cock, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix Iny'signaturc in presence of two witnesses.
.FRANK H. HOYT.
