Description
- UNITED STATES BENIAIVIIN F. BOOK, OF GAINESVILLE, TEXAS.
PAINT COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,969, dated January 1, 1895.
Application filed July 5, 1894. Serial No. 516,617. (lilo specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. BOOK, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Gainesville, in the county of Cook and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Paint Compound, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to paint compounds, and has for its object to provide a fire and water-proof coating material adapted for application to wood and metallic rooting, boats, &c., to preserve the material from corrosion and render the same impervious to water.
The improved compound consists of coal tar, forty gallons; resin, twenty pounds; plaster of paris, five pounds; alum, one pound; borax, one-half pound; asphalt, ten gallons; liquid storax or styrax, one-half gallon. Said ingredients are thoroughly mixed by stirring, and are boiled until the resulting mixture reaches the consistency of hot pitch, after which it may be applied with a brush to the article to be coated.
The functions of the various ingredients above named in the compound are as follows: Coaltar serves as a body or vehicle; resin combines with the coal-tar to form a pitch and at the same time gives adhesiveness to the compound; the plater of paris causes the paint to harden and dry rapidly; the alum, homer,
and storax or styrax render the compound fire-proof, and are particularly adapted for use in the compound when the latter is to be used upon an inflammable article, such as a wooden roof; and asphalt adds to the body of the compound, causes cohesion between the ingredients comprising the same, and adds to the adhesive qualities thereof.
It will be understood that variations in the proportions of the ingredients of the compound may be made to adapt the paint for use upon articles of different kinds and for difierent purposes Without departing from the spiritof the invention, but the above named proportions I have tested and found to be effective under ordinary conditions.
Having described the invention, what I claim is A paint or coating compound, consisting of coal-tar, resin, plaster of paris, alum, borax, asphalt, and liquid storax or styrax combined substantially in the proportions specified.
in testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. ROOK.
