Description

NITED STATES ATENT Futon.
ALBERT SORG AND FRANKLIN D. PHILLIPS, OF ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN.
PAINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,868, dated December 11, 1883,
Application filed August 24. 1883. (No specimens.)
T at whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALBERT SORG and FRANKLIN D. PHILLIPS, citizens of the United States, residing at Ann Arbor, in the county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful composition of matter to be used in coating over or painting any inflammable material, thereby rendering it both fire and water proof, of which the fol- IO lowing is a specification.
Our composition consists of the following ingredients, combined in the proportions stated, viz: coal-tar, fifty gallons; sulphur, fifty pounds; hematite, (iron ore,) fifty pounds;
I 5 litharge, ten pounds; alum, ten pounds; salt, twenty pounds; asphaltum, three pounds. All the dry ingredients are to be pulverized before using. When desiring to apply the composition, the pulverized ingredients are mixed with the coal-tar in a large kettle, and then boiled for at least one hour, stirring occasionally, when it is to be applied hot with abrush to the article or substance to be rendered fireproof.
By the use of this paint shingle-roofs are not only made fire and water proof, but the wood itself is preserved from the decaying influence of moisture and heat, and this refers equallyto all exposed wood-work. It is equally valuable not only in curing leaky metal or 0 even slate roofs, but also in preserving all exposed tin or iron from the corroding influence of rust. I In fine, it is invaluable for any purpose where destruction from fire or. the exclusion of water is the object sought. 3 5
XVe are aware that paints composed of some of the same ingredients have been heretofore used for like purposes, especial reference being to Patent N 0. 268,382, issued to Henry H. Beers, December 5, 1882, in which coal-tar, hematite, sulphur, and alum are among the ingredients of the composition claimed, and whose exclusive use we hereby disclaim; but we are not aware that all 'the ingredients of our composition in proportions stated have 5 been used together heretofore.
WVhat we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The herein-described composition of matter to be used for the purposes specified, consist- 5o ing of coal-tar, sulphur, hematite, litharge, alum, salt, and asphaltum, substantiallyin the proportions specified.
