Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC MEAD BLAKE, OF COMPTON, QUEBEC, CANADA.
ROOFING-PAINT.
SPECIFICATION Iorming part of Letters Patent No. 286,255, dated October 9, 1883. Application filed April 6,1883. (No specimens.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MEAD BLAKE, a citizen of Canada, residing at town of Compton, in the county of Compton and Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofing -Paints; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to water-proof and fireproof paints for tin, shingle, and other roofs, the object of which is to provide apaint that will neither crack by reason of cold nor run or become soft because of heat.
To these ends my improved paint consists of the following-named ingredients, in sub stantially theproportions mentioned: coal-tar, fifty gallons; archangel tar, eight gallons; coaltar pitch, three gallons; raw linseed-oil; five gallons; finely-ground rock salt, three gallons; asphaltum, three gallons; muriatic acid, fifteen pounds; hydraulic cement, seventyfive pounds. These ingredients are to be thoroughly mixed by agitation, and the compound applied to the roof in a boiling condition.
When my improved paint is applied to a shingle or other wooden roof while in a heated state, the wood is thoroughly saturated at 0 the surface, the pores filled, and a thick slightly elastic coating formed that is not injuriously affected by heat or cold, and which renders the roof water and fire proof.
If desired, powdered emery may be used in lieu of hydraulic cement.
At times the commercial coal-tar is apt to be thinner than ordinarily, and when the coaltar is used in that condition in the preparation of my paint the quantity of coal-tarpitcli should be slightly increased to compensate for the difference in body of the coal-tar.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The herein-described roofing-paint, consisting of coal-tar, archangel tar, coal-tar pitch, raw linseed-oil, finely-ground rook salt, asphaltum, muriatic acid, and hydraulic cement, substantially in the proportions specified.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
MEAD BLAKE.
