Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID L. MEANS, OF ARKANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
PROCESS OF MANUFACTURING ROOFING-PAINTS.
SPEGIFIGATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 527,068, dated October 9, 1894.
' Application filed January 19, 1893. Renewed March 8, 1894. Serial No- 502,922. (No specimens.)
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID L. MEANS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Arkansas City, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, have invent-ed certain new and valuable Improvements in Processes of Manufacturing Roofing Paints; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the invention, such. as will IO enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to produce a paint which shall be fire and water proof, which shall be easy to manufacture for use,
easily applied and when applied to Wood or felt paper to penetrate and fill all the pores and making a hard and durable surfaceand when applied to metals, slate; stone or brick, to hold tenaciously to the same and successfully withstand the disturbing influence of changes in temperature, and the wearing of exposure to the elements.
My composition consists of the following ingredients, combined in substantially the proportions stated, viz: pure rectified coal tar, forty-eight gallons; powdered asbestos, eighteen pounds; New York plaster, thirty pounds; ground litharge, fifteen pounds; ground (dry) white-lead, ten pounds. The
0 dry ingredients are to be thoroughly mixed before adding to the rectified tar, which must first be brought to a boiling point, at which time add the dry ingredients, as above prepared. Boil the preparation for thirty minutes over a slow and even fire. Apply as litharge acts as a drier and the white-lead adds toughness and elasticity to thepaint, the boiling process causes all theingredients to thoroughly combine and the whole as treated above, constitutes an article of superior merit, as proven by actual applications and thorough and rigid experimental tests.
I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact proportions herein stated, as they may be varied within certain limits, without departing from the spirit of my invention; and I deem it proper to state that I do not claim broadly the use of any one of the above named ingredients.
I am aware that a composition consisting of asbestos, litharge, gypsum and coal tar has been used for a similar purpose I am also aware that white-lead is used in paints to a large extent; but I am not aware that all the ingredients of my composition, in the proportions stated, have been used to gether and treated as above stated.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The'process herein described of manufacturing roofing paint, consisting in mixing powdered asbestos, New York plaster, ground litharge and ground white lead, in the proportions set forth, then introducing the mixture into rectified coal tar, slowly boiling the same and constantly stirring during the boiling, substantially as described.
In testimony of all which I have hereunto subscribed my name.
O. D. RUsHM onE, J. P. SOULIGNY.
