ROOFING COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 707,710, dated August 26, 1902.
Application filed December 10, 1901. Serial No. 85,397- (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK A. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofing Compounds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and ex-" act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to roofing compositions; and it consists in a certain combination of elements whereby a more durable and advantageous roofing composition is produced. The combination of elements comprised in my said improved composition is of the materials and in the proportions following: three hundred pounds of bolted slatepowder; two hundred pounds of powdered soapstone; fifty gallons of coal-tar; one gallon sour milk, and one quart creosotine.
In making the roofing the coal-tar is first heated, the bolted slate-flour and powdered soapstone is then added and thoroughly mixed, after which the other ingredients are added to the mixture and thoroughly mingled and incorporated therewith. By this means a pasty mass is produced or a mass of the consistency of thin mortar, which may be readily applied to roofs in the usual manner. The roofing made from this composition is of a thoroughly homogeneous character and of great durability.
The substance designated creosotine is a product of the distillation of coal-tar. It is a liquid and is known in the trade by the name creosotine.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described roofing composition of bolted slate flour, powdered soapstone, coal-tar, sour milk and creosotine in the proportions, substantially as specified.
