WATERPROOFING COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,479, dated August 20, 1889.
Application filed May 16, 1889. Serial No. 311,009. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS MANAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in \Vaterproofing Compounds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a composition of matter serviceable for saturating or waterproofing paper or sheathing material, as set forth in the following specification and claim.
The compound consists of resin-oil, resin, pine-tar, spirits of turpentine, and alcohol, in substantially the following proportions: To about thirty gallons of pure strain ed pine-tar are added about five gallons of spirits of turpentine and about two gallons of alcohol. These ingredients are well mixed, by stirring or agitation, in a suitable vessel. About one or two gallons of this mixture are then added to about fifty gallons of resin-oilcharged with resin, the resin being dissolved in the resinoil in the proportion of about one-half a gallon of resin to about fifty gallons of resin-oil.
I have found the above proportion to give satisfactory results, though of course they can be varied somewhat to suit various conditions of climate or atmosphere, since in summer or hot weather, for example, tar is apt to be more liquid than in winter, and conse quently to require more turpentine or alcohol in Winter to liquefy the tar. The alcohol acts as a drier, and in place of alcohol any other suitable drier can be used; but I prefer alcohol.
The compound can be applied to the paper or sheathing in any suitable way, as by drawing the paper through the compound or applying the compound by means of brushes or by rollers, between or past which the paper is moved or drawn.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described composition. of matter, serviceable for waterproofing paper, consisting of resin-oil, resin, pine-tar, spirits of turpentine, and a drier, such as alcohol, substantially in the proportions specified.
