Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. ELLIOT, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOUNDS FOR ROOFING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,308, dated November 26, 1878; application filed November 21, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. ELLIOT, of Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Compound for Roofing and other purposes, which compound is fully described in the following specification.
The invention relates to that class of com; pounds used for covering or coating metallic and other roofs, and for all purposes where a water-proof surface is required.
My composition is composed of about ten gallons gasoline or coal-tar, two gallons asphaltum, twenty pounds oxide of iron, one pound India-rubber. The asphaltum I use is such as is known in the market as asphaltum varnish. The india-rubber is dissolved in benzine or other suitable solvent before being incorporated with the other ingredients of the compound. The above-mentioned ingredients are thoroughly mixed, so that all the parts will be chemically united; and as the asphaltum, gasoline, and india-rubber are already in a liquid state, no heat is necessaryto form a perfect union of all the parts. This is very important, for the destructive properties of heat, even of a slight degree, on bitumen and india-rubber are well known.
In practice, I may add powdered minerals or earthy matter to the compound above-mentioned, to reduce it to a semi-plastic state, so that it can be spread on the surface to be coated in comparatively thick layers; but I prefer using it without powdered materials, and apply it with a brush in the ordinary manner.
I do not confine myself to the use of my compound on tin or metallic roofs. Itis equally well adapted for wooden roofs, and for coating of ships bottoms and all iron-work exposed to the weather.
One great advantage of my compound is that it is comparatively unaffected by thermal changes.
I prefer to use the ingredients in about the proportions specified; but I may vary therefrom without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The compound herein described, consisting of gasoline or coal-tar, asphaltmn, oxide of iron, and india-rubber, either with or without the powdered materials, when compounded substantially in the manner set forth, and for the purpose specified.
WlLLlAM G. ELLIOT.
