Definitions
- My invention relates to a new composition of matter designed more especially for paint.
- the composition consists of the following ingredients and preferably in about the proporiions given, to wit: Five pounds pulverized slate-stone, one pound rosin, one and one-half quarts crude hydrocarbon oil, one pint raw linseed-oil, one pint Japan drier.
- the rosin is melted and the ingredients thoroughly mixed, the result being a liquid of about the consistency of ordinary paint, adapted to be applied as a paint or coating for walls, ceilings, roofs, &c.
- the compound when dry is hard, durable, and susceptible of high polish, and is well adapted for black boards. It is impervious to moisture, and is essentially non-combustible, and consequently should be classed as a fire-proof paint.
- the compound may be made thinner by increasing the quantity of the oils, or by reducing the quantity of pulverized slate-stone. If a heavy coat is requiredfor instance, to cover walls, ceilings, &c., in place of the ordinary hard finishuse more pulverized slate-stone, to make the compound plastic rather than liquid, in which case it should be applied with a trowel or other similar tool rather than with a brush. Difierent coloring-matters may be added,if required.
- That I claim is- A new composition of matter, consisting of pulverized slate-stone, rosin, crude hydrocarbon oil, linseed-oil, and Japan drier, mixed and in approximately the proportions given, substantially as set forth.

Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DARIUS S. ROBINSON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HARRISON E. GILMORE, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
COMPOSITION FOR PAINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,360, dated February 11, 189i).
' Application filed May 28 1889. Serial No. 312,446. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DARIUS S. ROBINSON, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Composition for Paint and Analogous Purposes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a new composition of matter designed more especially for paint. The composition consists of the following ingredients and preferably in about the proporiions given, to wit: Five pounds pulverized slate-stone, one pound rosin, one and one-half quarts crude hydrocarbon oil, one pint raw linseed-oil, one pint Japan drier. The rosin is melted and the ingredients thoroughly mixed, the result being a liquid of about the consistency of ordinary paint, adapted to be applied as a paint or coating for walls, ceilings, roofs, &c. The compound when dry is hard, durable, and susceptible of high polish, and is well adapted for black boards. It is impervious to moisture, and is essentially non-combustible, and consequently should be classed as a fire-proof paint.
If a very thin coat is required, the compound may be made thinner by increasing the quantity of the oils, or by reducing the quantity of pulverized slate-stone.
That I claim is- A new composition of matter, consisting of pulverized slate-stone, rosin, crude hydrocarbon oil, linseed-oil, and Japan drier, mixed and in approximately the proportions given, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification, in the presence of two witnesses, this 27th day of March, 1889.
DARIUS S. ROBINSON.
