Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES S. SMITH, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOB. TO HIMSELF AND RICHARD C. GATCH AND PORTER IRON ROOFING COMPANY, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
METALLIC PAINT FOR ROOFS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,990, dated July 5, 1881. Application filed April 14, 1881. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES S. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the countyofHamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Paints for Roofs, 850., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a compound for paints adapted to be used on roofs and metallic surfaces.
It consists in the combination of various ingredients, which will be fully explained in the following specification.
I use the following ingredients, which are preferably combined in the following proportions: Candle-gum, twenty-five pounds, asphaltuin, four hundred and fifty pounds, (450;) resin-pitch, two hundred and seventyfiy'e pounds, (275 resin-oil, one hundred and thirty-five pounds, (135,) and benzine (deodorized) one hundred and fifteen pounds, (115.)
The parts are usually combined in the following manner: The candle-gum, asphaltum, and resin-pitch are boiled together about one hour and a half and then allowed to cool slowly. When partially cool the resin-oil and 'benzine are added to reduce the mass to the proper consistency for painting and spreading with a brush. More or less benzine and resinoil are added according to the desired consistency.
I have been able to produce a good article by the use of a larger quantity of'benzine, dispensing with resin-oil; but the use of both resin-oiland benzinemakes a better compound.
I have in some cases used rubber-gum in place of candle-gum, and consider it a substantial equivalent of the same.
Aroofing-cement has been composed of coaltar, clean sand, residuary gum of candles, litharge, water, lime, cement, qnicklime, and resin, said ingredients being combined and applied in two separate coats on a'roof; but
such does not constitute my invention, and is,
not claimed by me.
What I claim as my invention is Acompound paintconsisting of candle-gum,
asphaltum, resin-pitch, resin-oil, and benzine,
all combined substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES S. SMITH.
