Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. e, 1906.
Application filed June 19, 906. Serial No.,s22,s92.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I; SAMUEL G. PENNEY, of Allegheny, in the county;ofgAllegheny, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Composition of Matter to be Used as an Insulating Material, of which the followis a full, clear, and exact description.
. andw y composition consists of the following ingredients, which may be combined in various proportions, according to the character of the use to which it is to be applied. The
roportions here given are those which I have ound to be well adapted to the useof the compound as a varmsh or paint: maltha, twenty per cent., byerite, thlrty per cent. benzin, twelve er cent., carbon tetrachlorid, thirty-eigl it per cent. In compounding these ingredients themaltha'and byerite, together with a little colophony to act as a flux, are placed in a kettle or other suitable receptacle and subjected to heat until they are thorou hly fused and mixed. After these e ents have been fused and mixed e the are still hot the benzin and carbon-tetrac lorid' are added. The compound is then allowedto cool and is drawn ofi. The consistency of the compound of course may be increased or lessened b increasing or lessening the amount of solvent material. Instead of benzin gasolene or other equivalent may be employed, or the benzin may be omitted entirely where considerable consistency is required. A convenient form of maltha is the ordinary asphalt of commerce. p a
My insulating compound may be a plied either as a paint, varnish,'or paste to bondpaper, cotton-cloth, metallic surfaces, or
'wherever a coating of insulating compound is required, and it may be used either as an air-drying varnish or it may be baked on the material to be insulated in a suitable oven.
The advantage of my compound is that it forms a durable, fireproof, and eflicient insulating coating, which is capable of being readily repared and easily applied.
at I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein-described composition of matter, consisting of maltha, byerite and carbon tetrachlorid.
2. The herein-described composition of matter, consisting of maltha twenty per cent. byerite thirty er cent., benzin twelve per cent., and car on tetrachlorid thirty eight per cent. p
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
SAMUEL G. PENNEY. .Witnesses:
